PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are voting for your favorite riff in Round 3 of the December 2009 Riff-Off. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. In this round, there are two head-to-head matches. Be sure to check out and vote for your favorite riff in the other Round 3 match, also found in the Tips and Clips room. To view the bracket for this month's Riff-Off, go here.

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Re: Riff-Off 1.3: Robin Williams vs. Cookie Dough

Cookie Dough went for a Status Quo thing here... Robin Williams with an alternative rock intro... I wouldn't mind hearing both in a complete song. It was a tough choice here.

Pretty good stuff -

I really like the Status Quo meets the Raspberries vibe of CD's riff

Re: Riff-Off 1.3: Robin Williams vs. Cookie Dough

Both were excellent! But, as always, one appealed to me more at the time of voting - been listening to them both for about 2 hours

Re: Riff-Off 1.3: Robin Williams vs. Cookie Dough

Oh, no!

A :cool2: descending riff, or a catchy riff with :cool2: string clicks...

Choices, choices.:dunno:

Re: Riff-Off 1.3: Robin Williams vs. Cookie Dough

Voted.

Robin Williams had a good riff in this round, but it was a little on the sloppy side. I had to take some points off for that one.

Cookie Dough's was much similar, but it had a cool swing to it and made good use of space. That's what got my vote.

Re: Riff-Off 1.3: Robin Williams vs. Cookie Dough

I am frankly amazed at how close the vote is on this one --- One stands clearly head and shoulders above the other in this case.

Well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Re: Riff-Off 1.3: Robin Williams vs. Cookie Dough

Wow, another close battle!!

Robin Williams has really surprised me this round. After his last (uncontested) submission, I thought the semifinals would be the last we heard of him. Not so! He's back with a vengeance this round and has submitted one of my favorite riffs in the comp. so far. There's such an edgy, almost ragged vibe to this clip. Robin's playing is very distinctively loose in a kind of Mike McCreedy / Peter Buck kind of way. This riff is dark and heavy while not being metal, and that's refreshing.

Cookie Dough continues to play to the crowd with a very prototypical classic rock-ish riff here. Well-played, like all his submissions, but a bit lacking for me this time in terms of creativity. Of course, the voting here is so close that I must recognize that my opinion is not necessarily shared by the rest of the community. I do like the jangly, upper-register timbre here and would probably really enjoy this solid submission more in the context of a song with drums and bass.

Both excellent entries, as expected from these two worthy contestants. I do have a clear favourite though.
