PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are voting for your favorite riff in Round 1 of the January 2010 Riff-Off. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. In this round, there are eight head-to-head matches. Be sure to check out and vote for your favorite riff in the other seven Round 1 matches, also found in the Tips and Clips room. To view the bracket for this month's Riff-Off, go here.

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

It does? That's weird. Shouldn't be a problem. Anyone else finding that they're being asked to save the file?

Tough one, both are great styles of riff.

Both sound very similar. Stockholm has a Sabbathy influence about it that appealed to my ears.

tough one - both are great. and kinda similar.

Going with frizzle here. It gets right to the point like a good riff should.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Frizzle Fry vs. Stockholm Syndrome

Frizzle Fry: Greasy and fuzzy. BAD for cafeteria meatloaf. GOOD for this riff! This is one of those riffs where I can't quite pin down an influence, yet the riff is familiar and has a groove to it. Well done!

Stockholm Syndrome: I think a higher tuning by a step would help give the riff some definition, but that's just me. Then again the low tuning does give is a cool sludgy-ness that works for it. The way the riff repeats three time and goes into a b-section for another three times kinda throws me, I'll admit. A solid effort.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Frizzle Fry vs. Stockholm Syndrome

both seem sort of obvious to me, but had to go with stockholm simply because it sounded cooler, which is what it's mostly about to me.

I have to admit I'm getting bored of blues rock riffs - even though two of the ones I did were that. They start to feel too easy or that they've been done. Too much like the thing you play on automatic pilot when you pick up your guitar.

see attached image.

I was having the same problem w/ first riffoff....sorry, can't remember how exactly I fixed it but I remember having to mess w/ the default settings in both Explorer (internet options) and the main Windows default settings ....poke around in both places and it'll go away...
