PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are voting for your favorite riff in Round 1 of the January 2010 Riff-Off. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. In this round, there are eight head-to-head matches. Be sure to check out and vote for your favorite riff in the other seven Round 1 matches, also found in the Tips and Clips room. To view the bracket for this month's Riff-Off, go here.

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Ah now these ones i can sink my teeth into! Inigo..... listen to Slayer much? ;)

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Inigo Montoya's Revenge vs. The Atomic Punk

Going with atomic punk here. Jumped right out at me. After a few seconds I could almost hear the finished song...(at least what I'd do with it.)

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Inigo Montoya's Revenge vs. The Atomic Punk

Votered.

Interesting how both have the same slide-in intro
I guess that's the "ahem" throat-clearing move for guitarists - blows out the string gunk

Anyhoo, I liked the darker tonalities of Inigo's, but I prefer the jumping around like a 'tard feeling I get from A.P.'s.

Sorry, I'm simple-minded, what can I say?

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Inigo Montoya's Revenge vs. The Atomic Punk

Some tasty stuff in both entries here.

I think Inigo could stand to back off the distortion a tad. There's some weird echoy clipping going on that starts to get distracting.

Punk, the doubling of the guitars is pretty effective here. I actually think it's played twice rather than straight doubling as the little variations in the first fill sound almost like a harmony. Subtle, not overboard.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Inigo Montoya's Revenge vs. The Atomic Punk

Inigo Montoya's Revenge: Sounds like a BLS fan! I really dig the ascending trills at the turnaround. Ferocious.

The Atomic Punk: Yeah! A real good fast one. I can hear a killer beat behind this. I wish I could hear this with a full band. I like the syncopation in the first half and the simple but effective rhythmic motif of the A chord on the second half. Killer.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Inigo Montoya's Revenge vs. The Atomic Punk

To me this was like Emo Zakk vs. Kerry Hanneman. Slayer wins for me.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Inigo Montoya's Revenge vs. The Atomic Punk

inigo's was cool - but lost its riff focus for me ... too many different bits .... every time i expected the whole thing to repeat, he'd toss in another change ... for me, a riff has to be tight and repeatable ... this was more along the lines of very cool and heavy variations on a motif - but not a riff ... if he had edited his ideas down to a concise few, he wouldve been harder to beat

atomic punk's was happenin ... wouldve been essentially perfect if he had put in a repeat so as to hear the riff well defined ... i am a sucker for well conceived and executed use of chromaticism too ... this was easy for me

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Inigo Montoya's Revenge vs. The Atomic Punk

inigo's riff is friggin' huge sounding! crazy! a little overbearing.... in a good way though. it's very heavy/chuggy with some cool trills and such.

atomic punk's riff on the other hand seems like it may be one of my favorites in this round, but i'm not yet sure as i haven't listened to all the submissions. quick, high energy, heavy but not too metal, it's great!

btw, inigo, you might want to consider lowering your input volume when recording. i'm hearing this sort of high end distortion that i often hear when listening to low quality videos in your recording, kind of like a high pitched static.

Voted. Not really crazy about either, but a choice had to be made!

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Inigo Montoya's Revenge vs. The Atomic Punk

The mp3 glitchy sound of Inigo is distracting. The riff is huge but nothing special.
I prefer the Atomic punk on this one, since is really fluid, and has full potential f being the "chorus riff" of a popular song. Great indeed!

Holy pinch harmonics, Batman!

I agreed 100% with this one, even though I didn't read it until after I voted. Inigo's was almost an assault on the listener (in a metal way). It sounded good but was just too much for me.

And the doubling of the guitar was very well done. And even on the first listen, I caught that there were differences in the left and right side's notes. They blend beautifully, and although Inigo's riff was more my style, Atomic Punk wins my vote here.

Inigo's got a really middy slayer type metal sound. It's pretty cool, though I like to have a little more bottom end UMPH.

like the Punk's sound. that really got me.
