PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are voting for your favorite riff in Round 1 of the January 2010 Riff-Off. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here. In this round, there are eight head-to-head matches. Be sure to check out and vote for your favorite riff in the other seven Round 1 matches, also found in the Tips and Clips room. To view the bracket for this month's Riff-Off, go here.

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Manwich vs. Spaghettibutt

I think there's some problem with Manwich's track - it sounds like it jumps forward in the middle... am I the only one having this difficulty?

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Manwich vs. Spaghettibutt

Yeah, I'm not having a problem with it either. Plays for fifteen seconds smoothly all the way.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Manwich vs. Spaghettibutt

Have to go with manwich here. The riff is simple and catchy. Spagetti's was too dissonant for my taste.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Manwich vs. Spaghettibutt

Went with Spagbutt here, good solid riff that would sound great with bass.

Me too. Although I liked the dissonance a lot. It just started to sound like he lost focus and started with too many fills or variations on the simple theme.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Manwich vs. Spaghettibutt

Call me old, but Manwich's track felt comfy to me. Comfy's good. It's.....comfy :D

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Manwich vs. Spaghettibutt

I would like to hear spaghettibutt's clip played with a bit less fizzy gain, but I thought the riff itself was cool. I'd like to hear manwich's clip played on a bass!

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Manwich vs. Spaghettibutt

Manwich: This should be the intro to a hit single by Weezer or something. I love it! Catchy and melodic.

Spaghettibutt: The dissonance may or may not be to everyone's taste. Personally I think a distortion tone really rich in 2nd order harmonics would work well for this riff. But it DOES sound like the riff kind of lost focus near the end. Good effort, though.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Manwich vs. Spaghettibutt

went with Manwich only because I felt like Spaghetti was meandering all over the place and I still couldn't put my finger on what was going on after multiple listens.

Re: Riff-Off 2.1: Manwich vs. Spaghettibutt

Manwich reminded me of Pavement (thats a good thing IMO)

..Two great riffs...
