Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

(It's a little different this time around.)

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 1 of the February 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other fifteen riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

Contrary to previous Riff-Off tournaments, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the eight contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 2.

I encourage you to score each of the sixteen riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here is a link to this contestant's Round 1 riff: Cerdeña

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

I'd like to hear it with some drums. Seems like something's not quite right.

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

It is perfectly 4/4! the whacky part is on purpose I think, and it makes it original. Not my taste, but original and funny indeed!

yeah ... no

sorry dude
the varying meedly bits send it off the rails for me

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

I really like the idea of varying where the accent is to confuse the ear, but make sure it's all intentional. Might want to study where the accents fall a bit more so it grooves and turns the listener's ear.

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

Not bad... kind of an 80's thing going on here. I dig the slide-y bits although they could've been done a bit more precisely. I got the 4/4 thing right away though the syncopation in the second half of the riff is unexpected. A good solid effort!

Yep. With a solid drum track that bit of wackiness would make perfect sense I think. I really like the idea, just sounds like it needs help on the execution.

I love this tone

dang

that's just so freakin' buzzsaw!

riff is neat too

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

The off-kilter slides are a detraction IMO. I expect to hear the drummer spazzing on those parts simply for the sake of the spazzing.

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

A lot of little things happening in here, perhaps too many. Perhaps that's the intent. It kinda has unique elements to me but i can't decide whether i feel it's quirky for the sake of being quirky, or .....

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

The pitch shifting didn't hurt the riff for me. If anything, it helped to hold my attention with what sounds like an early Maiden progression to my ears.

+1 one the TONE>>>>>nice!

I know the "whackiness" bothered some but in my twisted system, you earned points for originality.....party on, Garth!

Took the words right out of my mouth. Those twists are exactly what I want to hear, only not so many of them, more carefully placed, and with some kind of cue. I realize that the "rest of the band" could be providing that cue too.

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

a little jarring, but points for trying to take a typical riff and make it oddball.

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: Cerdeña

Interesting. I like the bending or whatever you do with those notes. The single note runs to mark the end of each round of the riff could have been executed better. But it's cool.
