PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

(It's a little different this time around.)

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 1 of the February 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other fifteen riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

Contrary to previous Riff-Off tournaments, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the eight contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 2.

I encourage you to score each of the sixteen riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here is a link to this contestant's Round 1 riff: ░ ░▒░▒▒▓▒▓█▓▓█▓███▄▐▀▌▀▐▄

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

Nice. a drivin' rock riff.

tone is good.

I still dont get why people submit riffs to the riff off that sound like yesterday's riffs. how come nothing is ever catchy?

This is awesome to me as a guitarist, but as a consumer/average joe, i dont get too excited.

Wow, I like the clarity and the two different guitar approach. Nice Hamonics, and well done!
BTW, I didn't know that speedy Gonzales played guitar LOL

had to give it fairly high score despite the annoying battle name and overdubbed harmony (i think they shouldn't be allowed)

with a normal name and no harmony, i mightve scored you higher than i scored myself ...
i am guessing you'll go far in this tourney - great talent

Bingo. Rockin'. That's a riff, right there.

Name looks like a runaway nasty semi truck belching out black smoke.

Appropriately, the riff sounds like some Trucker Speed Metal, so I like it. Great driving groove, I'd love to hear the rest of this song, especially the inevitable half-time groove that you know is imminent. Good harmony choices, knowing hen to double, when to harmonize and when to go to the octave. Tempo is nice and locked in. Good stuff.

In the last round I saw that having a familiar and accessible riff tended to gain a contestant more votes than if they'd gone with something more experimental. Ideally you'd combine both like Redmist did with his first two riffs. There's an interesting psychology behind it that I'm still kind of studying from here.

Anyways, this riff kicks ass. :D

I was totally prepared to hit my "1" button based on the annoying and distracting battle name alone. I mean seriously. You should see my screen!

You're just dam lucky you have some chops to back up that annoying name. I had to give you a good score much to my dismay.

I still dont get why people submit riffs to the riff off that sound like yesterday's riffs. how come nothing is ever catchy?

Clearly this is catchy. This is kinda where I was going with my "is the blues still relevant" thread a few weeks ago. To my ears this is clearly rooted in the good ol' classic rock pentatonic stuff. There's a reason it works. There's a difference between timeless and yesterday.

JS Bach put it best when he said "People don't know what they like, but they like what they know". Consider Every Breath You Take by the Police...Sting wanted to do any progression but the one he used because it's the one to Stand By Me, but it worked best for the tune, and it sold gazillions of records.

This is a kick ass riff because it has history to inform it. It's all been done, and this is done well.

I see no problem with harmonies. Whatever brings the riff closer to the artist's intent given we can't use them in a full context.

Probably scored this one higher than I shoulda, as it goes on unecessarily long IMO.

Yip, another good entry from what's his name.
Good timing, a bit long :), but I love the punchline at 14 seconds. Explains the whole riff in a wee vibrato.
Gave it a 5.

Re: Riff-Off 3.1: ░ ░▒░▒▒▓▒▓█▓▓█▓███▄▐▀▌▀▐▄

It's a mighty rock riff. It's good and well-played. Trouble is that it doesn't bring anything new, it is predictable, so it will somewhat limit the way i score it. As rockin' riffs go, it's a good one, for sure.
