PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of sixteen riffs in Round 1 of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other fifteen riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the eight contestants with the highest average scores will advance to Round 2.

I encourage you to score each of the sixteen riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here is a link to this contestant's Round 1 riff: Dorkology

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

I like the second part of the riff, kind of has that Radar Love vibe.

Pretty straightforward - not one I'm going to write home about, but I must admit the last part definitely has some swagger!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

That's a lot to absorb. Nice playing but there's clearly too much here. Several riffs, some fills, and do I hear heavy breathing being pickup up b the mic?

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

too many parts to be a riff ... it is a song sketchpad

editing is your friend

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

Yeah too much here, I wasn't sure what to key in on... what riff are we judging? Could have been executed a bit more cleanly as well...

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

Definitely more than one riff idea going on here... pick just one next time.

Overall it seemed like a few bars of 4/4 followed by one that was not... couldn't quit get the hang of that but I like the concept.

Execution could've been a little cleaner. Overall a good effort but it needs some cohesion.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

i like the vibe and style of it. needs to be cut down to one riff though. nice fills in there.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

Could become a cool track but I couldn't really pick out a single stand out riff to home in on. I enjoyed listening to it though.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

You sure have the chops! Cool attitude. But there are too many ideas going on here.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

Yeah, this is half a song, dude. Not bad, but not a riff. Not even by my broad standards.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

I have trouble accepting this as a riff, too. Also, either my headphones are broken or this riff is recorded at about a quarter the volume of every other one.

this is why I run all the tracks through Mp3Gain before I listen to them - just to make it all equal.

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

There really were several great ideas presented here ........ enough to have gotten you through at least two rounds if you had split them into separate submissions.

This was obviously not borrowed from or inspired by ............... but after I listened to this chordage ZZ Top's
"I Heard it on the X" started running through my head. That's a good thing!

Re: Riff-Off 4.1: Dorkology

lotsa noodling going on. good noodling for sure, but you gots to real the line in a little bit for the final cut man!
