PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE POST BEFORE VOTING!

You are rating one of four riffs in Round 3 of the March 2010 Riff-Off. Each of the other three riffs can be heard and rated in the Tips and Clips room. More information about the Riff-Off can be found here.

As with last month, this month's Riff-Off has no bracket; each riff will be rated on an individual basis according to a seven-point scale. Once all of the polls have closed, the scores for each riff will be averaged, and the two contestants with the highest average scores will advance to the Championship Round.

I encourage you to score each of the four riffs. You may wish to listen to each riff before voting in order to establish a baseline. Of course, you are free to score riffs however you like, in whatever order you like. You could even give each riff the same score, if your impressions dictate so. It's all in your hands!

Because not all contestants have access to the same quality of recording equipment, your voting decision should be based first on the actual composition, second on the player's execution of the riff. Try to look past recording quality. Some questions you may want to ask yourself while considering which way to vote: What is the emotional impact of the riff? How original is the riff? Does the riff inspire me? Would I want to hear a whole song built off this riff?

Note that each contestant has chosen a battle name for the Riff-Off; their identities have been hidden from all other contestants and the voting public, and will be revealed at the end of the Riff-Off, when a champion is crowned.

Lastly, while comments are strongly encouraged, please realize that each contestant put personal time and creative energy into his or her submission. If you have any critique to provide in this thread, give the contestants the courtesy of making it constructive. This competition is built on the premises of fun and musical growth.

Here is a link to this contestant's Round 3 riff: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

If you run into any technical issues or have other questions regarding the Riff-Off, PM or email me (kgmessier at gmail dot com).

Have fun!

I liked the melody, but I had a really hard time getting oriented. Seems like this riff would be strong with a drum beat, but I can't honestly say that this one will get stuck in my head, because I can't understand where the "1" is.

I loved the punk tone

I loved the energy

I loved the tracking / mix

:headbang:

I'll vote later, I need to listen to it a few more times

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

I liked this one. Great tone. Lots of hooks and changes.

Edit: any chance of revealing what amp was used?

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

i liked this - nice and tight driving - had an iron maiden quality that i dug - no problem finding the one ... happenin tone and chops and feel
like others, it struck me as less compact than i like a riff to be
but solid and enjoyable

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

Here's what Uncle Paul had to say:

"POD-modeled 5150 with the 'treadplate' (recto) cab"

From a POD?!??! I'm even more impressed. All this time I've wasted mic'ing my tube amp trying to find a sweet recorded tone... I just might have to give recording from a POD a try...

Thanks!

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

I'm having a hard time with this one. To my ears, it sounds a bit too typical to be ear-catching, yet it is a prime example of this particular musical style. The descending 16ths were cool though!

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

i too really like the 16ths part. give it a cool iced earth kinda feel

and for some reason the tone reminds me of "and justice for all," even though it doesnt actually sound too much like it. haha.

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

Oh man... wow. From a technical standpoint it's hard to wrap your head around (not sure of the time signature) but that didn't take away of the appeal of it from me .

Fast, furious, kind of a take-no-prisoners kind of riff. I dig it. With a shovel.

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

YEEEAAAAHHH!

This is what it's all about. I think the riffer was sandbagging this competition, because this was awesome. It's in-your-face without being overbearing. It's just well done. I wish I had more eloquent praise for it, but it was brilliant. Excellent marks.

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

I had to listen to this several times before I finally got it.

There's enough uniformity to make it riffy and yet it keeps me off balance and somehow drags me in ..... and the tone is a perfect fit.

This is a little outside my personal taste, but I appreciate the talent here and really wish I could play this well!

High marks!

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

nice. as I listened, my hair grew 10 inches and started blowing in the wind. next thing you know I was riding a horse through the woods, chasing an ogre.

very european sounding. dig the tone, vibe, and tight playing. took me a sec to pick up on the tempo, but not the riff or riffer's fault.

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

I love it!!! Very cool! Doublebass triplets in the back ground, fat bass and you have a killer chorus! Yesss!

Re: Riff-Off 4.3: Uncle Paul Hahrrgis

Alright, these temp. names drive me nuts, but I think that this is the dude that rocked it Offspring+gagger style last time, if so, well, I liked the last riff a lot more, but this one is good. I know which two I'd like to see in the final, and this person is one of them. Keep it up!!
