Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. Tor

Well, you've all had a few hours to digest the final scores. The winner, by ONE VOTE, is...

B2D!

Congrats to both of you! It's clear that either one of you is worthy of the title. B2D will remain Riffologist Supremö, and the winner of the March 2010 Riff-Off will battle him for said title next month.

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. Tor

Ouch. This is that situation when it's all up to personal preference, isn't it?

One's no better than the other, really. One has a great bluesy quality to it, the other a great Celtic quality. :dunno:

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. Tor

Congrats to B2D on the TITLE!

.........hats off to B2D & Tor ....two SOLID riffers.....NICE WORK HERE AND THROUOUGHT THE CONTESTS!!!

Re: Riff-Off TITLE BOUT: B2D vs. Tor

I knew A would be Brenno, since he wouldn't let the tuning issues from B slide, but I still stand by my original post.

As well you should, my friend. ;) For what it's worth, the original way the riff was played resolved in a somewhat more rhythmically solid way, but was precitable, boring, and dull to my ears. I tried a few different ways and that one seemed to work best at the time.

Of course I thought of something much better a few days later. Isn't that always how it goes?

Thanks to all who voted - especially Fretfire. ;) And thanks for all your comments. I appreciate the positive remarks and I take the criticism with good consideration. I thought for sure Tor was gonna win it. I liked his riff better than I liked mine, to be honest. We traded PM's back and forth on what and how we did it, and he's got some REALLY cool tricks up his sleeve but I'll let him tell you about them.

My riff was from an R&B jam I wrote a few years back. It never got recorded by the band I was in but it's got lyrics and everything, so I'll have to do up a full studio version at some point. During recording I found it sounded the best when it was kept simple - used a Fender model from my POD with a little reverb. The guitar was - as usual - my Silhouette Special but this time the pickup was the neck Screamin' Demon with an A2, so now you all know what it sounds like. :D

Congratulations to Tor for a very well-played round, being a champ and making it so far. It was a close race and that's how it should be at this level - splitting hairs.

Again, thanks to all. :D :headbang:

Wow! This was fun! Thanks for the votes and comments – it is really encouraging!

First off, congratulations, Brendan…! I saw this victory of yours coming after a few seconds of the first listening of your riff – to be dead honest, I instantly loved it! Just oozes of coolness, while at the same time being teh hawtness. Tor is seriously impressed! I'd love to hear you finishing the song this will be based on!

is it just me who thinks that neither of these entries fit the swung eighth note / triplet feel ?

I struggled with getting my head around the swung triplet feel. So after having noodled around without any real results to show, I was frustrated, and put on the Roadhouse song by The Doors. Then I found something that would fit that rhythm, and took it from there. The swingy feel was probably lost in the transition from the slower rhythm to a faster one (although it might be that it was not that swingin’ to begin with.. still unsure).

As for the Celtic feel, I actually didn’t think about it before Keith mentioned it to me. I was making this riff, but felt it needed some spice in the note choices around the ending part of the riff, so I turned my attention to this clip, because there’s a note choice in there that makes for a very interesting melody.

As for the effects, the only effects used were a little rhythmic delay and reverb. While I was noodling around with the riff that evolved, I played it with palm mutes a few times and thought it was cool. However, with all the string skipping, I didn't have the skills to keep up the speed while palm muting evenly in addition. So I ended up jamming cotton between the pickup and the bridge and adjusting pressure to suit the muting effect.

This was probably the source of VK’s point of criticism, as the tuning was all right before I applied the cotton. I was too occupied with getting the playing right, and forgot to check if things actually were in tune when I handed in the riff. This is the second clip where intonation has been an issue, and it bugs the heck out of me because I generally am cautious of my tuning.

Anyway, this was played with delay and reverb. Then I added two tracks that essentially played the same riff effects dry and without the cotton, but these would go into the background, panned hard left and right. First time I have used more than one track in the Riff Offs.

I can definitely see what you mean by riff B not being fully qualified for being a riff, t4d. I’m very unsure about my own definitions these days, though, so I am not sure if I agree or disagree (yet). Thanks for the tips regarding the instrumentation around!

Again, congrats to Brendan, you are a true winner! :)

loved them both, i cant decide!!!

You don't have to. :)

edit: dang it, I'm having a serious case of writer diarrhea.

Congratulations to Brenneaux, and even more congratulations to Tor for being what I'm sure is the most gracious runner-up I've ever seen.

I loved it all, you guys rock!

lay it on us, brosephus
:D
thanks

Ah yes, forgot to cover this.

I think each riff in the Title Bout got about 60% of the way into the swung-note thing I had in mind. However, it didn't bother me that terribly, because what I want more than anything is to take the competitors slightly out of their comfort zone, and I think I achieved that.

As for how to vote based on that criterion, I'd say consider it as one of the elements, but don't allow it to sway your vote more than, say, a point in either direction.

How's that?
