Right or Left Knee?

Classical position or not, when seated?

I've played in some capacity since I was 14 , with my zenith being ~age twenty or so. But I had to re-teach myself how to play guitar at around the same time as my join date on this forum, and ever since then I've made it a point to either practice standing/with a strap, or seated on the left knee. In my previous guitar-playing life, I always rested the guitar on my right leg but for the last two years or so, I turned myself to the habit of using my left leg, classical style.

Just to see how it might feel, I switched the other day (back to the right leg,) and... Man. My playing is so much smoother, flows free-er, more like my playing while standing with a strap (always my preferred way to practice.) Strange, because I had convinced myself left-leg positioned the guitar more like it normally would sit on a strap. Using my left leg, it now feels much more like my right hand has to reach and angle in funny ways to hit the strings. This isn't really with respect to a particular body style, but I mostly play Fenders/Superstrats.

Anyone else have a preference, or a strong one anyway? 'Classical' is supposed to be right; maybe I need a foot stand?

I've always kind of shifted during playing. If I need to be really high up the neck for extended times, I shift to my left leg, but I prefer my right leg most of the time.

Left leg, classical style, while seated. When standing, I have my strap set fairly short, so the guitar is way too high on my body to look cool. Can't play a guitar that's hanging down by my knees.

I find it depends on the shape of the guitar. A little on each knee. When standing I have the strings at zipper height. Been spending my whole life with my hand at that height so it's a comfortable spot.

Didn't miss that one. I guess that's the same reason my hand is usually comfortable up higher, say around ribcage area ;)

That's my excuse for wearing my guitar dorky high, anyway.

Right leg...
Standing, I have the strap at a medium length. I just can’t play when it’s at Jimmy Page depths.

Re: Right or Left Knee?

Right knee- actually, the guitar is just above the right knee, supported by the strap. Putting it on my left knee forces my head to turn and my left arm go away from my body causing pain after awhile.

Re: Right or Left Knee?

Dirty classical usually, but it really depends on the chair/stool-height and if I'm leaning back on a kitchen-style chair or sitting on the edge, in which case I get a wide stance and just let the guitar hang between mostly by the strap. Having a footrest or not for the left makes a difference also.

I can't stand right leg because it forces the right elbow to go up high.
