what are some good ring moulation pedals? something very flexible, preferably just has the ring modulation on it and nothing else. and one that sounds good (i know, i know). but i dont want to spend 192833783764983274682374 yen on it. the moog looks nice but its damn expensive.

Re: ring modulation

The coolest one I've ever tried was on the Snarling Dogs Mold Spore wah. It did wah and ring modulation, either or both, and had a blend control so you could dial in just a little bit of the ring mod. But the single coolest thing was the ability to control the pitch of the ring mod with the rocker pedal. I can't use ring modulator any other way because it just sounds so out of tune and random. But if you tune it to the note or chord you're playing, it's the hugest, heaviest thing I've ever heard. I'm not kidding. Jeff Beck did this on some tune off of his You Had It Coming record. Mine broke unfortunately but I still love the tones I got with that pedal.

Re: ring modulation

I recall that Zappa used to used one called a Green Ringer. Bily Gibbons may have used one too....not sure. Anybody know anything about this device and it anyone makes one? Bob Moog (RIP) was the master at designing analog musical devices that make weird noises, so I would suspect that the Moog would be a quality piece.

Re: ring modulation

Frank Zappa used a riong mod all the time...it was the Dan Armstrong green Ringer. n fact, frank even had a few of them built into a few guitars. Jeff Beck has starte using them lately, as there is onw built into his wah pedal as Matt pointed out and The Rev does use on like on Cheep Sunglasses but it's a custom one of a kind. I've been looking for a ring mod for a while now but most if the good ones are way too much green...

If you ever want to go with a multieffects unit, the Boss ME-50 has ring mod....

Re: ring modulation

Almost every decent Multi effects unit built in the last 20 years has ring modulation, NS ;)

Sorry it's not guitar, but...

I think THE best example of ring modulation on record is Jon Lord's intro to "Lazy" on Deep Purple's Made in Japan. You can hear the space noises as he plays different organ notes against the RM's oscillator, and you can hear what happens when he re-tunes the oscillator against fixed organ notes.

BTW, the schematic for the Green Ringer is available on line if you're of a DIY bent. If you can't find it PM me. Like all those little Dan Armstrong plug-in boxes, it's a fairly simple circuit with a low part count. I hope to get around to building one someday. An Orange Squeezer, too.

Re: ring modulation

I ad one of the old Maestros and it was pretty out of control. With some of the pitch shifters, you can trick it into doing a faux 'klang und farben' with distortion in front. As far as DIY, isn't it a pretty simple diode based circuit?

Zerb shows his age! I don't know what mutli-FX he was using at 9, but I don't remember that many multi effects that weren't built by Bradsaw back then! But Zerb may have had those kinda mad chops at 9....:laugh2:

Re: ring modulation

Didn't DOD produce a Ring Modulator/Distortion pedal called the Gonkulator Modulator or something strange like that?

It was a short lived pedal that was a ring mod with "Grunge" distortion...those damn things being a ton of cash on ebay now considering that when they were still being made CG was blowing them out for $19.95 because NOBODY wanted one!

BTW...anyboidy try the EH ring mod?

Yup, I think it's the FX-13? DOD stopped making em'. Then the guy from Incubus use one on a few tunes. So if your a Incubus fan/or play in a band that covers them ... it's a must have item.:13:

Re: ring modulation

A classic ring mod tune is "The Red Baron" off Billy Cobham's Spectruum record. Jan Hammer plays licks that sound like a pushbutton phone through a Marshall stack. Beck claims that's the first place he heard the effect. Oh, and that record features THE Tommy Bolin playing--the dude just rules on Spectrum.
