Rings.... big metal rings... do they affect tone???

Curious, because sometimes I feel rowdy and put on a huge metal ring on my first pickfinger....
kind of like you know who....pictured here:

since pickups are magnets, and the strings disrupt those magnets to cause signal, I was wondering how a huge chunk of metal flying past the magnets may effect the magnetic field so to speak??

could it draw the power from them making the signal weaker, OR amplify the disruption causing some mojo goodness to happen?
or does it have zero effect??

Thoughts?

Re: Rings.... big metal rings... do they affect tone???

Do the strings affect the magnetic field?? I think something magnetic in its own right would affect the field, but maybe something that is just attracted to the magnet might not be. There is plenty of metal in pickup covers and the baseplate too.

Re: Rings.... big metal rings... do they affect tone???

at room temperature, only iron, nickel and cobalt are magnetic. by extension, some alloys of those metals can be ferromagnetic. Steel included, because it contains iron. Silver, gold or pewter rings are not going to cause any effect on the magnetic field. Stainless steel will self induce a magnetic field, but it'll be pretty small/weak because of the distance from the magnetic field source (the magnet itself).

so technically yes, with steel rings, there will be some change in the shape of the magnetic field emerging from the polepieces/slugs, but it might be too small to notice a difference.

Re: Rings.... big metal rings... do they affect tone???

The ring I've got is a little more organic than those; you could even call it meaty. That has a very deep resonant tone, though sometimes it's been known to be a little farty...

I think I just threw up in my mouth a little.

They'll only affect your tone if you get them tangled in the strings.

Re: Rings.... big metal rings... do they affect tone???

So our general consensus answer would be.... "Not Much" ???

Re: Rings.... big metal rings... do they affect tone???

I've read (but not experimented personally) that metal PICKUP rings can affect your tone. I have a guitar that had plastic rings originally, but will have metal ones when it's done, but since it's been 3-4 years since I took it apart...
Also there's that whole metal pickup baseplate issue (Tele pups with the baseplate VS Strat pups without them)

Re: Rings.... big metal rings... do they affect tone???

They might affect your dexterity.

So my vote is yes. They might get in the way of your "tone".
