ok I know I said before that I was gonna go for the f50... but now I'm having doubts. The rivera is pretty damn tempting espiecially from the standpoint of variety. I haven't been able to try either of these amps since I live in the middle of MAINE. sounds like the rivera has a more marshall-style distortion, while the mesa is more... mesa-style. what do you guys think in terms of quality of construction, tone, and variety of sounds?

If you do a search, you will find my comments about the Rivera Chubster/Clubster. I don't like Mesa, so I'm biased in that sense. I say go with the Chubster, tho I don't like only having 1x12.

Here's what I wrote in that thread:
"I personally prefered the Chubster to the Clubster.

The Clubster really isn't my kind of amp: it has a more vintage style voicing, reverb, only 2 preamp tubes, if memory serves, uses either 6V6 or 6L6 6tubes, and only has a 10" driver. The gain was pretty good, and it gets really loud, but I'm not a blues guitarist, which is what I think that this amp is really good at doing, or if you want to run a vintage Strat and keep it really clean.

The Chubster is a great little beast: 5 preamp tubes, just like it's big brother, the Knucklehead, only 1x12, (which I wasn't digging, but only because I'm used to playing a Knucklehead full stack). However, I was able to get this amp loud and it did high gain stuff with relative ease. It also has boosts for both channels, just like the Knucklehead, which is essential for getting a really high gain sound."

I'm a dedicated Rivera Knucklehead user (just ask around). You can hear what the Rivera is capable of doing under high gain at www.twilight-odyssey.com.

davidd has a Chubster and loves it (I think his is a 40) - he said it's great for gigging and gives him 4 usable tones with just the footswitch, no pedal.

I haven't played through a Rivera, but they have the reputation of being one of the best amps at getting Fender cleans and (close to) Marshall crunch

Have heard both...the cleans on the Mesa are great.
The dirt is very nice, it takes pedals well.
I used to have a Rivera...have one no more;)
BLASPHEMY!!

Re: rivera chubster 55 and mesa f50

I'm not necessarily looking to re-create a marshall sound, I just mentioned that i heard that the chubster sounds more like one then a mesa. I personally am not into screaming leads and wailing high notes, etc. I like crunch. I want this thing to be capable of some serious gain, all the way up to latter-era tool stuff. I know the Mesa can pull it off but can the chubster. It doesnt have to sound 'as good as' a marshall.... I want it to sound better :)
