Robby Krieger (Doors) tone

The local classic rock station played a Doors Spotlight thing this weekend, and it reminded me of how cool Robby Krieger's tone is on some of their songs. His playing is usually overshadowed by Ray Manzarek's organ, and he's not exactly a guitar god, but man did that guy get some great clean and medium-gain tones. I especially like "Break On Through" in that regard, as well as "Peace Frog" (in which he actually plays a very good harmonized solo).

Does anyone have any info on what was in Krieger's rig? Any insights would be appreciated. Also, if you would like to add to my list of great Doors guitar songs, please post.

I've heard that he also had a Fender Vibratone rotating speaker

A big part of his sound is that he plays with his fingers....

I remember seeing the Doors and I was pretty sure he was playing Sg guitars thru Acoustic Amps. Acoustic Amps were very poular back in the 60's. The proved to be very dependable, but somewhat limited tone wise.

It's funny how everyone's tastes are so different :) Krieger always comes up as one of my top picks for absolute most horrid guitar tone of all time....but so many dislike RR's tone for example (see other thread), and I *love* Randy's tone :shrug:

I used to have a video from the early 90's called suttin like "Night of the Guitar", and it was basically a bunch of older more "obscure" (i.e. has-been) 60's/70's players..The guys from Wishbone Ash, Alvin Lee, Leslie West, Some white dude who took way too many drugs in the 60's and thought he was Jimi Hendrix (big Fro and all), and several others...Krieger was on it, and he STILL sounded like crap (to me)..he was playing through a BOSS ME-5 digital Multi-effects thing straight into the board ( I used to have one too, talk about sterile. I can't believe any professional would ever use such a thing). His playing was excellent, however..very Jazz-Rock fusion-esque. Surprised me actually.

I agree with Dave and I've seen alot of footage of seeing Robby playing through Acoustic amps and with an SG...Not sure on effects,but his clean tones are very memorable...Later I think he did use fender amps..

I'll be interested to see what he using on this tour... a friend in the right place has put me on the guest list to an up coming Doors/Pat Travers show!!!! Can't wait!!!!

:laugh2: I had one of those too! There is no WAY I would ever go direct to the board with it! It had good chorus and decent delay, but everything else was crap, especially the OD/Dist.

Speaking of PT- I supplied PA for him a couple of years ago for a local nightclub date- man, he still smokes! It was so funny, the opening act's guitar player wheeled in this double stack, all kinds of effects, 3-4 guitars, and sounded terrible- PT came on with a single Marshall cab that looked like it had been kicked all around the world, and a 5150 head, and a flanger and wah, and just wailed! great tone/great show!

I used to have a SG that was supposed to have belonged to Robby at one time. There's actually a cool story about that guitar, but that's for another time.

The SG (std) wasn't the best sounding guitar, to put it nicely.

I love Robby's playing, I think it fit in perfect for the Doors type of music, but I have to agree with the other guys - I think his tone was awful.
