Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

What do I use? Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinkies.

Best of luck in your string search.

I use whatever happens to be on my guitar at the time.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

Been running XL120 9-42 D'Addarios since my hair metal days in the early 80's. Love the feel of GHS boomers but have problems with breakage at the saddle on the wound strings with them. Can't remember the last time I broke a string in a set and I gig out 3 night a week at least.

Ernie Ball Cobalt Power Slinkys .011 to .048
in B Standard tuning

48 for a B? Talk about low tension :laugh2: You'd basically have to be feathering that string to make sure you don't get that 'bowowow' out of tune thing.
I like light on top too, but man, I gotta have tension on that low string.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

As of the last few months I've been using Sfarzo 'SFT Screamers' & 'Super Screamers' (a few guitars with regular 9's & a couple with regular 10's). I used to use D'addario's for years (but started finding them a bit too bright, thin & fizzy/tinny lately...maybe they changed them, or maybe I'd been buying fakes..). I greatly prefer the Sfarzo's.

The SFT Screamers are a bit brighter/more balanced overall & seem (very noticeably) to sustain forever while the Super screamers are bit more middy, sort of like EB Slinky's but they "feel" smoother/nicer.

I may need to try those. I forgot they made 9 1/2...probably be nice on the strat.
They don't come in 9.5s but I have a dealer who will swap out the plain strings when you buy a set.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

I've been trying out different strings lately, I bought a lack of the Dean markly helix, and they have lasted surprisingly long. The cobalts are pretty cool to. I love drs in my strat. I'm going to try some Dunlop's next

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

I now use Elixer nano web lights and custom lights exclusively.

I used DRs for over 20 years and certain techniques in certain places were always hit or miss for me so I just thought I needed more practice but then I tried some Elixer nano webs and everything in my head came flying out of my guitar with no effort at all.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

I can't believe more people here don't use Elixrs...

It' all I use on all my guitars and bass. They sound as good or better then anything I've tried and feel so much nicer then anything else...specially on acoustics.

Also they literally last 5-10x longer then any other brand I've used. That's not an exaggeration.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

Dean Markley Blue Steel strings in varying gauges to go with whatever tunings I'm running on my guitars. The lower the tune, the heavier the string.

Blue Steels are the only string I haven't broken, and they seem to stay brighter longer.

Re: Rock and metal guys what strings are you using?

I end up changing strings on some of my guitars more often than I really need to because I like to change out pickups and electronics wiring so often... I try to keep the strings nice during a pickup change so I can put them right back on, but that doesn't always happen. So it makes sense to use a cheaper string brand.

Because some of us don't like Elixr strings. The strings I use last 6months to a year or more, depending on how much I play a particular guitar (I have 15). Plus I pick hard enough to break certain brands of strings, and shred certain types of picks, so the polymer coating on Elixrs gets on my nerves because it eventually frays.

I can't imagine a 48 in B, I'm starting to think a 60 is floppy.

I'd try elixirs, but I need something bigger than a 56 but not as big as their baritone set.

I've been using DDT's and Heavy Cores. I'm gonna order some La Bella HRS 72's because I like the gauges. I should be able to use the same set for AA, B std and Drop A.
