Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

Any opinions on which one is preferred assuming you like to play modeling amps? Mustangs are less expensive and have the computer hook up option, but Roland has seems simpler to manage.

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

Are you playing clean jazz? If so, get the Roland.

Are you playing blues or country? If so, get the Mustang.

Are you playing metal? Neither will really fit the bill.

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

I think that is a fairly decent statement. I love the Roland, but I love it because it is dirt simple. Model > bass, mid treble, gain, level done. Toss a spot of verb or some modulation, go!

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

What sort of power output level did you have in mind? Above about 20w, the loudspeakers and cabinet materials in the Roland and Fender modellers begin to let them down. Have you checked out the latest Blackstar modelling combos and heads?

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

wait a min
the 30 watt cube I got from Ascension is a totally giggable amp
plenty loud
nice rich tone
takes pedals well

what mo u can u want?

I play mostly Classic Rock and Blues.

I have a Roland 60 that I like a lot. I would not be embarrassed to show up to a gig with it at all. I don't really use the lead channel much, or anything but the reverb, but as a clean palette for pedals, it's pretty awesome.

I played in a metal band with a Roland JC 120 it sounded sick. Every metal player in our practice space envied my tone. I even had the guys across the hall knock on our door to settle a bet, they thought I bought a Marshall stack. I miss that amp should have never sold it. I even used a cube 60 for a while for a practice amp.

JC120 is a huge, expensive, legendary SS 212... a cube is a teensy lil practice toy for kids with squier strats. NOT rly seeing the connection here :)

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

I kinda like my Vox VTX 60 (one of the oldies), does what I need it for, which is practicing at home, not really enthused about the models but some of the 70s marshall models and the fender model are somewhat to my taste. Also for fiddling around with very basic effects it does nicely. Then again if I were going for a new at home practice amp I would go for the low wattage tube amps. Played on a cube from a bandmate also, do not care for its tones much really...

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

I like the Cube better because easy controls, clean chanel is very nice (gets along very well with my pedals) and has a solo (volume pump). I did not compare the modeling options very detailed but I the Cube covers a basic range from vintage (delux, ac30) to metal (rectifier, extreme) that is ok for beginners or people wanting minimalistic setups (no big pedal board to carry, just your footswitch).

I wouldn't consider the Cubes toys. Sure some of the smaller ones aren't going to work for much more than bedroom practice, but the 60 and the 80 are totally giggable.

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

If you have enough money for a Roland Cube 80XL, go for it. Honestly, the small Cubes aren't that good, but the 80XL KILLS!
The Dyna amp mode sounds great. Rob Chappers actually uses that amp when his Silverback is down.
Hope to have helped. Good luck deciding!

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

Cubes are great. I had a Microcube as a practice amp for years.

Does a great Marshally sound, and also a great Recto sound. And many things in between. The Marshally sound cleans up surprisingly well with the volume knob, too.

Just don't buy the Cube 15 (if they still make that one), cos it was the only one without COSM modelling. And it sucked.

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

Run straight out to the board with the Cube. The models sound wicked hellacious!!!!!

And a JC 120 is a MONSTER! Slap a distortion box in fromnt and the volume from that beast, Hell yeah!!!

But it is way way more than the Cube JC model.

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

Roland has been using the name Cube for over thirty years. The earliest ones were straightahead solid state with a horrid built-in overdrive channel and a laughably small reverb spring tray. (THINK - Early Billy Bragg.) I had the grey 60 Chorus model for about a year. Used it at a band contest held in a local 500-seat theatre.

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

They had a "Blues" cube that was pretty sweet for a while too.

Mike it. There I go again! :)

Don't discount the smaller amps - lots of hits were cut with them... Remember a song titled "Layla"? I seem to remember Joe Walsh was another big user of small amps in the studio.

Re: Roland Cube vs. Fender Mustang

Are you just looking for a practice amp, or something more?

Several years back I got a brand new Micro Cube shipped to my door for $99. It's a great practice amp and was worth every penny.
