Rotosound strings

Hey guys, I have been using these for awhile now. I've noticed that there is more fret wear with these then there is with D'addarios or Ernie Balls or even Elixirs. There also always seems to be this black spot on one of the strings from a fresh set with the rotos. They feel a little rough compared to others too. I do really like the way they sound, but I wonder if the store I picked them up from had received a bad batch or something. I've read that a particular type bass strings set that roto makes for basses is very hard on the frets. Makes me wonder if their electrics also have similar issues..

I use 9's on mine nickel plated usually, so far elixirs are the least fret offenders but not really the right feel for me, too slippery. Daddarios are the second best while Ernie Balls don't seem to gel with my body chemistry and end up rusting too soon :(

Any rotosound users notice a similar effect as me from using them on their electrics?

Re: Rotosound strings

I noticed this when I was playing them too.

Here is the thing with strings. Harder the wrap alloy and stiffer the core/plain string material, the longer they last. They take more abuse. But they wear harder on frets.. especially cheap alloy frets on alot of Korean/Chinese/Indonesan guitars.

Yeah I have experienced significant fret wear when using Daddario Pro Steels 10's on my PRS SE. I used them for a whole year and half, they sounded bright and clear than the regular Nickel EXL ones but those Steels have steel wrap around the core of the wound strings, it tool a while for me to notice the abuse they were causing. It was after that when I switched to Roto pinks cause they sounded similar to those but were nickel wound. I'm gonna switch back to using Daddarios, I wanna try out their Nickel 9.5s set next :)

Re: Rotosound strings

I use Rotosound roundwound strings on several of my bass guitars. They have excavated ruts through the varnish and into the maple fingerboard of my fretless Precision Bass.

I hated Rotosounds on guitars. I love them for recording basses though. The sound on tape has such a nice cutting growl that you have to make a real effort to screw it up
