RotoVibe vs UniVibe vs Phase 90

What does a RotoVibe bring to the table that a UniVibe or Phase 90 doesn't?

I'd like to know why I still see them in certain artists rigs when they can obviously afford a better Vibe pedal? I mean, I like both Vibe and Phase 90 so it's making me wonder if there's something I'm missing out on?

Re: RotoVibe vs UniVibe vs Phase 90

maybe because the rotovibe is a simple version that offers instant speed settings with it's wah-style expression pedal?

Re: RotoVibe vs UniVibe vs Phase 90

the phase 90 doesnt sound like the other two

Re: RotoVibe vs UniVibe vs Phase 90

Back in the day (metaphorically speaking) it seemed the Rotovibe and Uni-Vibe (both from Dunlop) were really the only players for this type of tone. The Rotovibe is solid state I believe, while the Uni-Vibe is a lamp system. I think the Rotovibe is a bit more in your face, so maybe artists in that era liked the tone, and have kept their rig the same despite the many advancements in the Vibe and rotating speaker simulator markets over the past 10 years, easpecially by boutique makers.

FWIW - I still like the Dunlop Vibe. I like Dave Fox's better, but I preferred the Dunlop to the Fulltone. (Blasphemous, I know. ;))

The problem with boutique stuff is that they frequently make it 'too clean'... ie, nice or hi-fi sounding. Sometimes it's the **** they take out that makes something work as well as it does.

I learned this with the Phase 90. I bought a script logo 'cause it was 'better'. Well it was... nice and warm. Much smoother. Didn't work nearly as well with higher gain settings and lacked the in your face cut of the block logo version.

Re: RotoVibe vs UniVibe vs Phase 90

I can definitely see that. I like the old scripts for clean an verge of breakup tones (especially the 45!) but it can get lost under a true high gain amp like a Mesa. In a similar sense, I bet the Rotovibe holds up under gain better than the Uni-Vibe (at the expense of vintage correctness).

Re: RotoVibe vs UniVibe vs Phase 90

I've never played a uni-vibe, but I've played a voodoo labs vibe, a roto-vibe, and I have a pickle vibe.

The Roto vibe, while not sounding like that super thick pulse I wanted to hear did have a cool sound. Kinda like a phaser and a vibe together maybe?

I didn't like the voodoo labs, it was noisy and not thick enough.

I like my pickle vibe for now, but it kinda sounds like the rotovibe to tell you the truth... but not as controllable via foot pedal.

Re: RotoVibe vs UniVibe vs Phase 90

i had the fulltone vibe pedal (the wah type one) and honestly, i didn't like it. it sounded awful through my orange and my bogner. i'm actually probably going to try getting a dunlop roto pretty soon.

YES.

i love the block logo one, definitely want to re-buy one soon (i fried mine a while back, and the EVH i replaced it with isnt as good). the block model kills for a lead boost & effect.

Mostly you are using that phaser at the same speed anyway on auto phase, why mess with the pedal? is there a difference in feel?

Re: RotoVibe vs UniVibe vs Phase 90

After having played a few univibe clones and having owned one of Bob Sweet's (RIP) MojoVibes, I ended up being blown away by the KR Megavibe. It had all of that filthy pulse that makes the univibe an attractive thing in the first place, rather than the two dimensional squeaky clean sterility that so many univibe clones seem to suffer from.

Here's my obligatory Bridge of Sighs demo with the KR Megavibe, coupled with a KR Gypsy Fuzz.

I found the 'throb' seems to vary from amp to amp. I have a Fulltone Deja-Vibe and through some amps/settings it has that very two dimensional, quasi phaser type sound that never gets very deep.

Yet through others (usually amps with plenty of bottom end) it has a crazy throbbing effect... so much so that I frequently can't use it on full intensity unless I'm doing Bridge of Sighs type stuff.

Re: RotoVibe vs UniVibe vs Phase 90

I don't like the Dunlop vibes...they don't sound like the originals.

I had one of these a few years ago and tghe Dunlops don't sound anything like it.

The Voodoo Labs gets pretty close for a decent price.
