rubbery tube amp

now that i own my first all tube amp i'm enjoying all the sweetness, sustain, and warm tone that people rave about. on the other hand, i'm quickly starting to realize that as outrageously good as it sounds, it seems rather rubbery to my pick attack. it's got such a springy feel that i can hardly shred with it at all.

one thing i noticed is that it has nice response for light/heavy pick attacks, but it's still very springy to me. about the only real fast things i can pull of clean is legato or sweep picking. i don't know if all tube amps have that quality, but the kustom and traynor i compared do.

at first, i thought it was just something i needed to get a feel for, but now it seems like a limitation. did i make a mistake purchasing this amp? can i even get an amp with this kind of tone, in this price range, that meets my needs for metal/shred/blues? some feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Well, what the hell did you get? :laugh2: Just buy an OD pedal, usually solves alot of tonal problems with tube amps.

it's a traynor ycv40wr and i have a rocktron multi-effects processor with 4 distortion/overdrive channels.

Drop the effects processor, Turn the damn thing up, and keep your trebs high, The squisyness ? might be in one of the tubes.. Some of the preamp tubes i have are Squishieer than others, but i doubt that is the case.. I would reccomend cranking it for a while, break it in.

Although I have never heard the YCV40WR, I suspect you are hearing the effect of Traynor's "tube rectifier emulation". I don't know how they implement this emulation of a tube rectifier, but if they went overboard with the effect, you could get the "springy feel" you describe.

(A tube rectifier will give you slower attack and recovery than a solid-state rectifiier.)

the ycv series amps have simulated valve rectifier that gives you the "spongy" feel. It's a good thing . I don't know how you'll work around it.

If it bugs you, there's a circuit mod that can be done to remove the effect.

An OD used as a slight boost(volume high/gain low) will tighten up things usually but i don't know how good it will work if the spongy effect is built in from the start.
If it doesn't work out,look for an Engl. They are genereally the tightest sounding and feeling tube amps out there and they still sound like tube amps(not like a krankenstein that sounds solidstatey)

i think the only other option in that price range is a kustom 36, and that sounded pretty good to me. the only reason i went with the traynor instead was because the kustom was just a bit fizzy and the cleans on the traynor were spectacular

what the hell do i know im still looking to spend my 1800 bucks on my first tube amp,my rig right now is a digitech 3000 guitar work station and a 150 watt line 6 half stack ,spider 2,and i have absolutly no complaints about that amp.
