Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

I recently ordered a quad for my Traynor because they were well priced and were not the same sovteks as stock rebranded...

I assume they are of Chinese Origin?

What can anyone tell be about these and their experience with ruby tubes in general?

Re: Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

Not generally a fan. I haven't tried their 6L6 types but I've been underwhelmed by the 12ax7s and EL84s in anything I've tried/heard them in.

Yes, they're rebranded Chinese tubes.

Re: Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

I'm starting to think more that I should have gone the JJ route...

Eurotubes staff told me thier exact rating number they recommend and they said a Eurotubes #57-63 rated quad would give me a close bias and a meduim breakup...

I hope ruby does a decent job matching theirs and i get a nice set!

Re: Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

I've always been a fan of JJ/Tesla tubes. I use their 12ax7s and KT88s in my Splawn and have their EL34s in my Bogner. Great, reliable tubes.

Re: Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

Never been fond of Chinese tubes (power or pre). I prefer (power) Svets, SED, JJ's, and (pre) RFT, Mullard, JJ, etc...

Re: Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

I'm thinking of doing some Mullard 12AX7's with some JJ 6L6's in my Traynor, see what's goin on there...

Re: Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

I have a #36 marked boxed JJ 6L6 from EuroTubes that I use with a Gold Pin High Gain selected EHX 12AX7 that is Russian in my Galaxie 10...

I love how the JJ sounds it really warmed the power stage and just gives me a fatter and fatter power tube distortion when turned up...lots of clarity and keeps your power tube breakup from being harsh...

I really love that tube but the fact that every JJ preamp tube I have ever had (6 total with a 12AT7 being the worst.) has gone microphonic right away or in a few days really sour'd me on Eurotubes...

I only really swear by the EHX 12AX7's but they indeed are really warm overall, but lowest noise of any tube I have auditioned minus a old RFT i think was the brand?....I liked the new Chinese Tun-Sol branded tubes in a 5150...lots of bite there and not alot of noise.

Depending on these rubys really selling me over the stock sovteks ill prob end up with a EuroTubes Quad of JJ's

Re: Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

Installed these today...got a quad blemished from MF for $38.

They replaced the stock 6yr old Sovtek 6L6GB's:

They were thin and have a harsh upper mid spike. Lots of noise in the power section ever since I have had the amp. I will say though that these are solid and rugged tubes! Just tonally harsh and noisey overall with no detail.

I pulled the Sovteks and shoved in the Ruby Quad:

Instantly warmer and smoother...There just seems to be more compression and the noise in the power section is almost extinct except at high master volume/breakup situations...I lost some of the attack in my mids but they are now more complex...the bottle glass is noticably thin and does seem more like a x-mas orniment than a power tube. JJ, Sovtek and Svetlana seem more solid IMO...

Quite a deal considering the only blem i saw was the punchout window on one of the tubes cardboard box was punched...the factory seals were not even broken...

overall with 3 EH 12AX7's from TubeDepot and the Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR Quad from MF a budget albeit decent retube only cost me $70 or so shipped...

I'm very happy though i think I'll go JJ/Eurotubes next time around!

Re: Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

Are those Rubies the Coke-bottle Chinese 6L6's?

I had a Bogen PA head I wanted to sell, but wanted to say it was "working" when I advertised it. It was very tweedy - octal pres and 6L6 outputs, cathode biased for about thirty watts.

I bought a pair of those Chinese Coke bottles unbranded in plain white boxes off eBay for dirt cheap and stuck them in there. That amp gave up one of the best sounds I've ever heard, for the three minutes it took to start boiling it's main filter cap's innards.

It is possible to get good-sounding tubes at bargain prices from China.

Re: Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

they are the more rounded bottom chinese 6L6's...the same tube i suspect as the raved about T.A.D. matched ones

I played em for 2 hours today and they dont heat up the chassis as much as the sovteks did...the russian stockers made me think about a better plan for ventalation...

do you think the chinese tubes were the catalyst that took down the filter caps?

Re: Ruby Tubes 6L6GC-STR

No - what took down the filter cap was the amp was 50+ years old, and I was the first person to fire it up in probably 20 years. I was a miracle it lasted THAT long.

Stop wanting to believe that all Chinese tubes are crap. They do make some good ones, and the prices can't be beat. I think I paid about $20 for a quad when I fired up that Bogen, which means I must have another pair around here somewhere....

Edit: Hmmm... searching eBay, I can't find any current auctions for them. Looks like the supply has dried up. Here's one auction by a guy like me who bought some awhile back. They were Shungangs.
