Re: S F X -03..............

TIP:

Buy low

Sell higher

Trade UP !!!!

Most of the stuff I own I've either traded for or sold something I already had to get what I wanted.

It's a little lesson I've learned from GJ & a few others around here. :D

Anyway....to the pedal :

The jury is still out & I want to do a shoot out between the SFX, FD II 10th Anniv MOSFET & the Mesa Boogie Bottle Rocket.

I played the Godin with Fralin humbuckers & a Strat w/Ant Surfers thru the Edana.

Fat & full all around....colored if you want it or semi-transparent boost-like if you want that.

I used the recommended settings & then tweaked to my tastes....I settled on the "Classic/Straight-Ahead Rock n' Roll Tone" setting as it's best suited to the stuff I play.

In bypass, you get the clean tone of the amp (which is great BTW:D )...switch it ON to the RHYTHM channel & you get a smooth full rhythm tone that gets dirty if you dig in. Reminds me of what it sounds like running the channels bridged on a 4 input amp.

Hit the channel selector to LEAD and it's classic-rock lead tone heaven! I set the gain to about 2:30 & dropped the volume to about 10:00 & it soared into saturation without a huge amount of distortion....basically, still sounded like the amp only fuller & bigger.

Turn the gain to about 3:00 & knock the volume up a bit & it starts to dirty up, which sounded nicer on the single coils than the buckers.

The size isn't bad, about the same as the Bottle Rocket. Nice solid build...the color is cool. My brother had a '78 Chevy Z-28 the same bronze/orange metallic color.

Again, I need to play it some more & try to set it up right with the other pedals.....lots a tweaking ahead to see what I'm gonna keep.

Is it better than the FD or Bottle Rocket??? I wouldn't say that....just a different flavor.

I was actually playing the VG-88 more due the complexity & vast array of crap in it......now THAT is gonna take a while!!! :D

I'll keep ya' posted.............

Re: S F X -03..............

I have a green one.... ;)

Actually the one I have is Evan's Beta 3rd Gen to fine tune his amp with.

.......and your findings Scott???

Did you try it thru the Edana???

If I had an Edana here, I might try it through an Edana! I have one here and it's all in parts sitting in a box right now. :) (sorry GR8)

Re: S F X -03..............

What up GJ ???

I was attempting to install the new pickups in the Charvel.....Parallel Axis Stacks in the neck & middle, Blues Saraceno was already in the bridge.

DAMN THINGS WON'T FIT !!! :smack:

SO...got an empty neck & middle & threw a Custom Trembucker in the bridge.

Been rocking out with the SFX & Fulldrive....got them tweaked just so. :headbang:

I've got the FD 1st in line & then the SFX....both pedals on their RHYTHM settings sound friggin' PHAT together....add in a little delay & OOOOHHHH.

The SFX is way easier to get sounding great. Basically takes your initial sound & kicks it up 2 notches. Drips with tone.

I've gotta get a better lead tone set on the FD, but I can see them getting along nicely :D

Yeah, I was curious about your comparison of the two hippest dual mode overdrives to come out this year...the FDII 10th Ann Mosfet and the SD Twin Tube Classic. They're totally opposite, in terms of design, so it'd be interesting to see which one sounds the best on most of your amps.

Also, you have a T. Rex Mudhoney, which I also use, so I'm wondering how that one stacks up. 3 Totally different overdrive styles!

Re: S F X -03..............

Yeah Joe, they're different enough to the point of both working well together.

The Mudhoney was cool too, but something had to go & I opted to keep the Bottle Rocket.

The SFX is pretty much plug & play....the FD has more options, so I'm still tweaking it a bit so they sound well enough together, but still sound great alone.

It's a lot of fun though :D

No sweat my man. No hurry and no worry. Still working on the car with no foreseeable end in sight. Been working on lots of things as well. Built another AK, but this one's mine!!! Gotta refinish it and install the double hook trigger group (requires milling a notch in the trigger opening of the single hook cut receiver). Mine will be a real peach when I get done with it. Will have an east german folder and will look like a riveted warty beauty in no time flat.

Re: S F X -03..............

I would SO love to do an A/B of the SFX-03 and the V-twin through my 2204... Trying to get away from Mesa because of the Ruby Tubes affiliation (too bad, too, I was really happy...).
