S.I.R. 100w SuperLead

Re: S.I.R. 100w SuperLead

As an FYI, I actually had this mod performed to my amp by the man himself. I ended up having to sell the amp due to poor finances. But yes, it is Slash-in-a-box.

Re: S.I.R. 100w SuperLead

Lets not forget that Lynch used this #39 for Back for the Attack as well.

No, it was not used for the recording of the album. However, George did rent it for a tour.

Several amps were used on BFTA, but the main set up was Aspen Pittmans '71 Marshall superlead.

Why are we talking in this old thread?

Ahh, the tour. Ayrton, do you know what happened to the old George Lynch site where all albums and tours were amazingly documented gearwise ?

We are talking on this old thread because it was popped up by the poster behind me and because I have Turrets like affinity for posting in old modded marshalls threads.

Re: S.I.R. 100w SuperLead

Warren and Robin both used a JCM800 100 watter on Celler, and a Warren used a Fender Champ plugged into an Orange cab using EV speakers.

Later Warren did have some amps that were modded by Frank Levi.

Interesting note for you, Slash never recoded with Caswell's amp. The Caswell modded Marshall was a '71 1959T, and Slash fell in love with it during the AFD rehearsals.

The amp that was used to actually record AFD is the later Frank Levi modded amp.

Yo Ayrton,
Maybe you can clear up the whole thing with early Ratt and Laneys, AOR/Pro tubes where they live only ? was it AORs or just Pro-Tubes? Thanks dude.

Re: S.I.R. 100w SuperLead

From what I understand the Laneys were used live only for a period of time. I would have to do some digging to know what models and such.

At the end of the day I will say this: if you want the slash sound, the AFD #39 will get you there. But it is bright!!

Re: S.I.R. 100w SuperLead

When i worked for Charvel in the mid 80's I asked Warren about the Laney's. He told me then that they were only props on stage because of the endorsement deal with laney. He said he used his Marshall superlead the one that Frank modded for him. Frank was also his amp tech on the road. as for #39, Lynch said he used it on Under Lock and Key for some parts.

Re: S.I.R. 100w SuperLead

Resurrection from the dead!

Does anyone still have the layout of this #39 SIR amp?

Re: S.I.R. 100w SuperLead

I never understood the love for AFD tone anyway...it had a nice crunch and sparkle to it, but it was extremely thin sounding for a LP/SL combination ..no "balls" (possibly from production and not the amp itself tho)

Amen to that. Though GnR was a refreshing sound when they came out, I never thought of Slash's tone as any kind of holy grail. It was crunchy for sure, but buzzy/bright/fuzzy/fizzy compared to the smooth, fat tones of the Jose-modded Marshalls, etc so revered in the day. To each his or her own... but that's a tone that I'll never chase.

And holy cow... what an old thread! I think it's cool when a really old thread comes back to life. Mixes things up from the usual same ole same ole.

Slash and EVH, two guitar tones I never understood the rabid following of.
