S-S-H volume level/balance...

I am thinking of putting two Vintage Rails and a JB Trembucker in my guitar. Will I have any serious volume difference issues when moving between the 5 positions on the switch?

Re: S-S-H volume level/balance...

It depends how the switch and the pups are wired. Also the height of the pups will play a significant role.

Re: S-S-H volume level/balance...

what cakire said is basically true but the vintage rails are very low output and the jb has a good amount of punch to it.

if you keep the vintage rails really close to the strings and keep the jb either backed away from the strings or in parallel then you may be able to get good volume balance.

if the jb is wired in typical series wiring its probably going to be noticeably higher output. not necessarily a problem, some people do that on purpose but if you want balanced output across all positions then it might be best to rethink those choices

Re: S-S-H volume level/balance...

How about if I were to use a VR bridge model for the neck/mid positions? Would that maybe help?

Re: S-S-H volume level/balance...

help? yes. but not all that much.

is there a reason you want the vintage rails? or the jb specifically?

a pair of custom stacks with the jb or the vintage rails with a pearly gates might be better matches

Re: S-S-H volume level/balance...

I know from past experience that I like the JB, and from checking around on Youtube I'm really liking what I hear of the Vintage Rails. I'm wanting both of those things on my Carvin Bolt, and I don't like what I'm hearing of the JB Jr.

I appreciate your help. :)

Re: S-S-H volume level/balance...

ok, so if we keep the jb youll want something with a little more grunt to keep up.

are you going to use 500k pots or 250k?

Re: S-S-H volume level/balance...

I'll likely be getting new electronics (removing the existing loaded Carvin S-S-S pickguard), so I could do either/or. I only know of the JB using 500k pots, never tried 250k (but I know many like it).

Do you know offhand how similar (or not) the VR is to the DiMarzio Cruiser? There are players who use a pair of Cruisers with higher output bridge humbuckers with good results, and I'm wondering how that would fare using VR's instead?

Re: S-S-H volume level/balance...

ive never tried a pair of crusiers but ive tried a guitar that had one in the neck with a bucker in the bridge. there was a pretty big output jump from neck to bridge. probably not unlike what you would get from the vintage rails and jb pairing
