Sad day.

Re: Sad day.

What kind of voicing did it have? How much gain (subjectively speaking)?
The lead channel had a fair bit of gain, but I have always gotten that with pedal's, usually through the clean channel.

Re: Sad day.

Nope. Now I'm trying to decide what I want to replace it with. Something with 6l6's I think. Any suggestions?

Peavey XXX? I got mine for like $350 a few years ago. Beast of an amp for that price.

Re: Sad day.

Budget? Combo or head? New or used?

Bill
Thinking of getting a head, because the speakers in the amp (it was a 2x12 combo) are still good. I don't think that I want to spend more than $600. Don't have a problem going used, though I would go new if it were a good deal.

Re: Sad day.

The smell of acrid smoke and horse's breath...oh I know that smell and the only thing worse is burnt hair, or burning bodies. When my 9200 died the first time, I smelled that smell and instantly shut down the machine and walked away.
What really sucks is that its something you really liked too, same as in my case. If you can't get it fixed, or fixed cheap, then I'm kinda with you on the idea of making a cab out of it. What else can ya do, right?

Perhaps Carvin will be able to help afterall?

Re: Sad day.

I've seen a 6505+ here locally for not too much. Also been looking at the Jet City 50 watt and the Randall 45.

Re: Sad day.

If you don't need wattage, or a stellar clean, any of those would be great. I've only played the Jet City, and it excels at 80's sounds. From what I gather, the Randall is heavier and more modern sounding.

If money in not a problem, I'd suggest a Hughes & Kettner Grandmeister Deluxe 40. It's my current head, and it does absolutely everything (cleanest of cleans to the most crushing distortion), including effects, in a small and light head. a MIDI pedalboard is a must, though.

Re: Sad day.

Lol if money weren't a problem I'd get a Soldano, or a Bogner or a Buhdda.

Re: Sad day.

Been doing some checking. Mercury Magnetics has a replacement ot for about $300. Anybody ever swap one of these things out?

Do you know exactly what's wrong with the amp ? No sense in buying stuff you may not need.

Re: Sad day.

Haven't had the gumption to take it apart yet. At some point I will, and asses the damage. Like I said, I suspect the ot. I know all about the stored voltages. Except how to make sure that they're discharged. Anyone who can point me in the right direction? Or have a chance to do away with me?

Re: Sad day.

I know I usually recommend tube amps, but the new Fender Mustang GT's and Peavey Vypyr Pro modelers are pretty impressive and priced right. The tones and features are great.

You haven't had it on for days. Most stored power would have dissipated by now.
Before opening it up
Turn it on, unplugged to the power. That should drain anything residual there.
Have you got a multi meter ? Once you open it up, test for any residual volts in the large caps.

Re: Sad day.

Ok
I'll do that.
But not tonight 😎

Re: Sad day.

Do like the sound of it. Thanks for all the support towards getting it running again. We'll see how it goes.

Re: Sad day.

A capacitor prolly fried. Or (hopefully not) the OT.

Both are easily replaceable.

Sell it? No way... get it repaired.

I've been using a Merc Mags OT in my modded Marshall for over a decade. Quality stuff; highly recommended.
