Safe to tighten tube sockets?

I know nothing about electronics, but I know my tube sockets are loose and I was advised to push the contacts in with something. What are the odds of me shocking myself?

Re: Safe to tighten tube sockets?

Find the last plate resistor in the power supply (or for the first preamp tube) and connect a jumper wire from the plate resistor (tube side) to the chassis. This will drain the residual voltage through the resistor. This takes about 5 mins.

Re: Safe to tighten tube sockets?

Use an insulated jumper wire of course, with insulated alligator clips, and be careful to put it on the tube side of the resistor or it will arc. Also be careful to use an insulated screw driver handle and wear rubber soled shoes when tightening. Use one hand at a time. In fact sit on your other hand. Do not place your spare hand on the chassis.

you can leave the jumper wire/alligator clip attached to the chassis for the entire procedure---sometimes big caps have more than one jolt in them...
