Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

I see many folks have different pups in different guitars. Anyone have their favorite pups in multiple guitars?

Yeah...the Alnico II Pro is my go-to neck pickup. I have it in several guitars. I have the 59/Custom Hybrid in the bridge position of a few guitars, as well.

Yeah i uused to use Custom 5's. To get the guitars to almost all sound the same when i was in a band. For "my sound" lol

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

I’ve moved the same pickups through multiple guitars. Does that count? Actually, that’s how I learned it takes different pickups in different guitars to get them to sound the same.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

Several with Jazz neck pickups, Les Paul's and Strats. Also had a few with Customs in the bridge, over the years. I'm thinking the JamesPaul set is Custom/Jazz.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

I have 5 different guitars that all have Rio Grande Muy Grande pickups in them. That is one pickup that for me works in anything. Anytime i am unsure what pickup i want in a axe i know i can throw a muy grande in it and I will be happy.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

I tend to go with a sound I like, unless the woods or overall sound of the guitar dictate otherwise. While I love the Custom Custom & APH-1 set, it was way too dark in one guitar. A magnet swap in both pickups made the guitar sound 'right' to me.

I like my different guitars to sound different. I find what sounds best in that guitar.

The same pickups in different guitars don’t sound the same, or even best in that guitar.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

It depends on whether we’re talking Strat vs Les Paul different or 2 different Les Pauls different.

I really only do the second of those. I have 2 Strats (one I gave to my daughter) and 2 Les Pauls. One Strat (mine) has 50s style pickups (BKP Apaches). The other (hers) has 60s style (Custom Shop Texas Specials).

Same with the Les Pauls. One has Antiquities, the other has Custom Shop Pearly Gates. I want 2 examples of the same guitar to get different tones. I’d rather have a 335 or SG than 2 Les Pauls that sound too much alike.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

I like the same or similar pickups so there is no big change from one guitar to the next. The output and sustain have to be pretty close or I will never use the one with the lower output pickup.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

I just tend to get most of the sounds I need from one guitar, because I hate switching instruments.

I have a P-Rail in two different guitars and will soon have a SSL-5 in two guitars.

Long ago I have a Super Distortion in two guitars but one was swapped with someone while buying his Charvel.

Because these are very nice pickups but as a general rule I agree with Dave :

I like my different guitars to sound different. I find what sounds best in that guitar.

The same pickups in different guitars don’t sound the same, or even best in that guitar.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

Different pickups for each guitar, but still all within the punchy high-output range.

It's funny to me how we all have different approaches, because while I take basically the opposite approach, I can see the wisdom in this. I suppose that's why I want my pickups to be "close, but not identical."

I also sympathize greatly with this approach:

I just tend to get most of the sounds I need from one guitar, because I hate switching instruments.

I once played "Hey Joe" on my LP when I have a perfectly good Strat, just because I didn't want to bring 2 guitars to the gig.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

I generally like the pickups in my gig guitars to be relatively similar, that way my amp settings work for whatever guitar I use. AP1, APH2, Custom Custom/APS1 and 59/custom with UOA5 cover the four guitars that rotate through my gigs. Usually, it's my Les Paul, my Strat and something that can cover for either one. There are only a couple tunes where I really want a specific single or humbucker tone, for the others it doesn't matter and I will gladly play anything on them.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

I like variety, so no. If I'm looking to acquire a new guitar, I'll want pickups that I don't currently have in guitars I own. If you put a gun to my head and forced me to put the same pickup in a different guitar, I'd probably use the Sentient neck again.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

Nope, but I'd happily have the Screamin' Demon in a Les Paul type of guitar and in a Telecaster if I could.
That pickup spanks and attacks real good.

Re: Same Pickup in Multiple Guitars vs Different Pups

I go a few different directions.

There are pups I love - The PG, Distortion, Custom, SuperDistortion. Multiple guitar pickups.

But the guitar, or just interest in other sounds makes me get other things...
