Satch tone - Day at the beach

Ive just spent the last couple of hours figuring out Satch's Day at the beach, im happy that I can play it, but im having trouble trying to get THAT sound. Im hoping some one out there can help. Im not looking to buy new stuff, just wanting advice on how to use what ive got a bit better.

Im using a marshall TSL60
have the option of using Hwy1 Strat (stock)
Epi Les paul (59N and JB bridge)
Jackson PS1 (cool rails, quarter pounder, Custom 5Bridge HB)
Have Boss DS1 and DD3 Delay, and Dunlop wah.

the way I hear it, its a clean sound, with reverb and hint of delay, played through single coil neck pickup?????

if anyone out there uses similar, can they please point me in right direction for EQ and pedal settings.

If there are satch freaks out there would also appreciate settings for always with me always with you.

Cheers guys

Re: Satch tone - Day at the beach

I'd get a Fred to get that classic satch awww sound. Hitting the strings harder seems to give a more vocal sound on any pickup. Try Bass at 10 Mid at 4 and treble at 7. I think those were Joes setting on his JSX. Doesnt that amp have active controls, that would sound horrible right? I dont know I read those settings at a harmony central thread a while back, my memory may be fading.

Just curious... have you actually heard the song in question?

OK... well the tone that drjones is referring to here is a CLEAN tone. Moreover Joe did not have his JSX amps until last year and this song is from 1989-90.

drjones: The only thing I could suggest is a hint of chorus because it helps with that wide, expansive sound satch gets there. Tonewise, I think you could get in the ballpark with your amp... dial in a deep, but tight and clear bass, strong and articulate mids, and a smooth but crisp top. A lot of the tone you're hearing is coming from the way Satch's fingertips hit the strings, too. Strong and forceful attacks are the key here.

That's the most gorgeous response to that post I could ever envision.

Errrrr... I wasn't trying to be a snot-nosed knowitall or nothin' (but I AM a huge Satch freak), just trying to clear up some confusion.

That track does appear next to some tracks with satch's "awww" lead tone and that album has 18 tracks on it... It might be easy to mix a few of them up. I just listened to the album yesterday so its kinda fresh in my memory. :D

Just wanted to make sure taphappy and drjones were referring to the same track I was thinking of. There's a VERY similar sound (probably the same rig with the same setup) on The Forgotten Pt. 1.

thanks lads. Think ive gotten as close as im going to get to that tone using either neck pick up on strat or the jackson. Have got the tapping/technique almost spot on, spent all my time on that, and virtually none on setting the EQ.

I have no idea what active controls are on an amp.

If i wanted to "dial in a deep, but tight and clear bass, strong and articulate mids, and a smooth but crisp top". how would i set the IQ??

Cheers

Get the amp up to the volume where the tubes will sound their best, twist those knobs through their full range and every which way you can think of, and trust your ears.

Honest. It works best for me.

I think the FRED pickup is part of it. I think a good rack mount delay through the FX loop helps.

Satch uses Marshall 6100s. I know someone who has one with an ART Midiverb, and it gets that Satch tone. Hell, he uses a Duncan PG and its just a different EQ to the Satch tone. the Fred is way thick in the mids.
