"Satinizing" the neck of my Washburn Renegade HM24

I recently bought a Washburn Renegade HM24 used but in great condition. I couldn't pass up the price..... and it plays fantastic. I've been wanting to take some 0000 Steel Wool and "Satinize" the neck.

I've never done it on past guitars for fear of killing the resale value. But I love Oil Finished and Satin Necks for their feel and playability. This is the type of guitar that I'll just leave out on a stand and just

plug and play in my man cave, so needless to say I'm gonna go through with it regardless.



My initial thought was to use blue painters tape and run it at a diagonal angle across the neck about an inch above the heel and an inch below the nut (think Schecter Blackjack SLS looks wise). Then I

wondered if I should run a strip of the painters tape on both sides of the neck horizontally to cover where the Fingerboard meets the Neck and to preserve the dots on the side of the neck. The side dots

are my only fret markers ( No inlays on the fretboard ). All I want to do is take the Poly off as opposed to taking it straight down to the wood. Is there any steps I'm missing? Any helpful tips? I don't

want to F this up so any insight would be awesome.

I cant really add much insight to stripping it, but cool idea and I would def mask the sides too. Im guessing the poly is pretty thick on it. Let us know how this turns out. I have one of those axes and they are monsters. Esp for the price! I upgraded pups (of course) and mine plays about as well as my WM526. The phenolic board is like glass isnt it??

I've done that on a few guitars that I knew I'd keep, I did that trick you mentioned as well with the tape over the entire stretch where the dots are and the other side. Feels great every time.

ive done that on my strat and my resonator and my classical too!. just rub it with scotch brite.

Yeah the Poly finish on these are definitely thick as you pointed out. I completely agree about the quality for the price. And the Phenolic Board is super slick, I'm really diggin it. As far as the stock Randall Pickups those are coming out ASAP, I got a Dimarzio Norton for the Bridge and a Dimarzio Air Norton (black/cream zebra's going in this beast) waiting to take over. Can't wait!!!

LOL! thats what I thought at first too!! Im not sure if OP's guitar is the black, white or silver one, but if he wanted to Satanize it, all he'd need to do would be get a black one and put blackouts in it. These guitars are really something. I dunno why Washburns arent a bigger brand. They can make a wicked guitar. These are really fantastic players and the phenolic board is so slick. I cant believe these can be had so cheap. And the big brother WM526 is unreal. It has the carbon glass board from the Parkers.

Just grab a lump of 0000 wire wool and go for it. I don't even bother with the taping things off, unless it's the pickups to keep stray bits off them. That grade of wire wool is going to take next to nothing off the finish anyway, so unless you sit there for hours rubbing away at it (ooh err...), you're not going to damage anything. All you're looking to do is just take the sheen off things.

I got the black one and it literally is all black....the hardware, paint, fretboard, & pickups. It's basically Noob Saibot in guitar form.

They really are great guitars for the price. Washburn never gets the respect it deserves. I've owned a few Washburn's ranging from the X50 Pro Boogie Street Guitars Limited Run to an absolutely stunning USA Custom WI68 Idol with arguably the nicest Flame Maple Top I've ever seen or owned. But its ok with me cause I'm able to snag their guitars for next to nothing and they are worth far more than what I paid for them.
