Saturday Night Special

Re: Saturday Night Special

seems like that many of the customers that think a Leesona would matter would think so because the Duncan company told them it does, based off the marketing of models that include the 59 Model and the Seth Lover and the Antiquity and the Pearly Gates and the Skinner Burst and so on.

To me, I don't know if being wound on a certain machine means much to me, personally.

Agreed. whatever they were doing to the JB in the last 70s and in the 80s seemed to really work, and I don't think those were made on a Leesona.

also... in the time it took between when the SNS was announced and when it came out, I asked for an A4-based PAF set with that 70s vibe from Mojotone - I think I also provided DCR as a reference point. the A4 set they made me was totally made on a CNC and I find it to have a lot of superior qualities. we discussed how they used the CNC for that set at one point, and while it's nothing I'm going to openly share, I think they hit a home run without using a Leeona.

Re: Saturday Night Special

It does matter to me if MJ is winding it, and that would justify the increased cost. But the machine? No more than the table the machine is on, or the lightbulbs.

Agreed. Very much so.

Even though it's been suggested that a machine like the Leesona would do all the work and one made by a production winder would be the same as one by MJ, it's just not the case.

Unlike some companies, I don't believe SD has ever attempted to describe how the Leesona winder actually influences the tone. They merely assert that it does, by boasting that they use it exclusively for various PAF reproduction models. It's sort of like how a naturopathic companies are careful not to promise too much, lest they get into legal trouble if they're ever put in the position of proving the assertion.

Is it painful going through life with that much pessimism?

Please don't derail this thread. You might not like my opinion on the Leesona winder controversy, but it is on topic.

Re: Saturday Night Special

I think the key word here is "controversy."

As in I doubt there is one, and even if there were it would be pretty trivial, don't you think? Let's face it... how much evil could possibly befall the world because of it?

Perhaps you could stop trying to derail this thread as well... everyone would really appreciate it I'm sure.

Re: Saturday Night Special

What this thread really needs is to be on the business end of a Saturday Night Special.

Re: Saturday Night Special

I never took it more than 'made on the machine that used to make them back in the day'. I never thought that translated into 'better'. It is a cool fact, though, but unlikely to sway sales (to me) or sound.

Re: Saturday Night Special

That's the way I viewed it too. Sort of like how makers of balsamic vinegar transfer a spoonful of vinegar from one vat to another over hundreds of years, so it always has a bit of the past in it. Doesn't make much of a technical difference, but carries on tradition. Maybe a little historic "mojo". Using the same machine that wound originals is much the same. A bit of tradition and history imbued into the pickup.

Re: Saturday Night Special

Well, with the vinegar, that spoonful contains some of the bacteria that makes the vinegar, so it's more than symbolic. It's the same as saving a little bit of sourdough to use as the starter for the next batch.

Re: Saturday Night Special

there is plenty of info about this out there but the lessona machine lays wire down a certain way and when you dial the coil size down so its 1/4" to fit the bobbin its running at pretty much at its limit so is a little less predictable. does that mean you couldnt program a modern machine to lay the wire down exactly as the lessona does? no, but its cooler to do it on the old machine.

Re: Saturday Night Special

Nope, but sometimes customers get a quicker response than I do..haha!
