Saturday Night Special

I inadvertently ended up trying out the Saturday Night Special set today and while it was ok, they left me really underwhelmed. Admittedly, my rig is set up to shine with the A2 based pickups in my other guitars, but the Shawbucker in my tele sounds great through the same setup. I'll have a little patience and give them another shot, but I really want to just rip them out now.

Re: Saturday Night Special

do you not care for the bridge or the neck? playing live or just at home?

Re: Saturday Night Special

I only tried this one at home, the guitar just showed up today. I'll give it a shot at rehearsal this weekend before I make a final decision, but they're most likely getting pulled.

The bridge was a little harsh on the low and mid gain tones and the neck just sounded flat. I'm sure that I could have dialed in a functional tone, but I don't want to have to constantly mess with knobs when I play live.

Re: Saturday Night Special

What did the stock pickups sound like? Was there a particular sound that you got with the stock pickups that you tried to fix with the SNS set?

The guitar shipped from the manufacturer with them, these are the stock pickups.

Oh, gotcha! How long have you had it? I'd give it a week or 2. But, what exactly do you not like about them?

Re: Saturday Night Special

Put some A2s in there!

i actually plan on doing that once i get the sns installed and give them a good listen with the a4. im such an a2 junkie when it comes to buckers that i know itll happen eventually

I just arrived a couple days ago. The bridge sounds a little harsh and thin and the neck just sounds flat and dead. I'm sure a lot of the could be dialed out at the amp but I need it to work with my other guitars.

Swap your and neck for my a2pro neck?

Re: Saturday Night Special

A4 humbuckers can take some getting used to. Their relatively even voicing can seem bland at first, especially if you're accustomed to the character of A2s. I loved my Wizz immediately but other A4 sets took time to get a feel for. Didn't like my McCarty pickups at all in the beginning but they grew on me.

I recommend playing the SNSs for a while (at volume) before giving up on them.

I like some A4 pickups that I've used over the years, these just aren't going to work for me in this guitar. The tones simply aren't usable.

I appreciate the offer, but I have a set of them that I may pull out of other guitars and use.

How much have you messed with the pickup heights?
Enough to know that it isn't going to resolve my issues with them in this guitar and my amp settings.

Re: Saturday Night Special

No A2 swap? You might like the wind. A4 is a very particular sound.

Easier to sell them while they are pristine and I wouldn't expect to get what I want, given previous magnet swaps that I've made.

Re: Saturday Night Special

suspicions confirmed at rehearsal, the pickups are coming out.

Re: Saturday Night Special

now that you tried them live, what dont you like about them?
