Saving My Guitar

I built my first Warmoth in 2002.

Version 1:
Flat top mahogany body
Maple/rosewood neck with a fatback profile
JB/'59
Volume/tone- 5 way switch with bridge pup split.
Cream humbucker rings
Black knobs
Sperzel tuning pegs
Red finish (suppose to be like Angus Young's SGs. Turned out a solid color)

Well I decided to get creative and I wired in a kill switch. Well it didn't do what I wanted so I wired in a LP style toggle switch for the Tom Morrello style kill switch effect. Then I didn't really like how I had finished it the first time so I refinished and in doing that I totally screwed up the top.

Version 2:
Same as version 1, but in dark brown and a f'ed up top.

Well it sat in pieces for the next few years and I decided to refinish it again, but this time in awesome 80's paint scheme! Well that didn't workout so well. I played it a few times and it sat in the corner.

Version 3:
Dimarzio Fred in the bridge.
1 volume
Added tummy cut (badly done)
80's finish done with spray paint.
Black humbucker ring
Chrome knobs
Same specs as 1

Well I played it like this for a while, but it sounded really choked off so I decided to attempt a 3rd refinish. I had a lot of problem areas I needed to fix so this guitar is basically getting rebuilt from the ground up. Everything I have grown out of or simply didn't like the way it turned out is getting fixed/changed.

Version 4:
Same specs as 1
Added contours
'JB in the bridge volume and tone control
Added veneer flame maple top
White humbucker ring and knobs
Finished in clear if I do it myself. The maple will be PRS style transparent blue and the mahogany left natural if finished by a professional.
I haven't decided if I filling the neck pickup route or doing something else with it.

Here is a bit of a picture journey....

The original

You can't see the extra switches, controls, or bridge in this photo.

#2
No photos taken. This is when all of the "scaring" took place.

#3
What was I thinking?

I didn't know what to do about the extra switch holes so I just covered them up with some extra output jacks and some bolts.

#4
Reshaping of the headstock (Peavey inspired)

I will be filling and redrilling the holes. As well as adding a veneer.

Stripped the body using heat and circled problem areas

Cutting of the out jack. I had a nasty gouge that would have been impossible to fix so I said "F it! I'm cutting it out; the guitar can't get much worse."

You can see the removed area on top of the guitar.

I am shooting for a combination of these looks

(I don't know who owns this guitar on SDF, but it was awesome and gave me some inspiration!)

I really like the way the veneer and contours were done on the 8 string and I like the coloring of the LP. This guitar will have a little bit of Parker in it too.

For Version 4 I will be keeping the Jazzmaster trem, but adding a roller bridge and nut. I was having some tuning issues before and the bridge was rocking on me. I am reshaping the headstock because it was really big and ridiculous looking and my tuners were not drilled right. Some of the strings would be bent of other tuners.

My goal right now is go buy some sand paper and get the body and the neck all cleaned up. Then get a rasp and start shaping. I have a lot of work ahead of me. Next will any and all filling I need to do. Followed by the veneer. Then finish. wiring. etc. Should be fun! I hope I don't screw it up.

Re: Saving My Guitar

That 8-string belongs to bulb, that thing rocks so hard(he posted clips of it on sevenstring.org).
I think what you have in mind as far as looks go should be awesome. Have fun.

Re: Saving My Guitar

The 80's finish would go great with a Rhythm Nation getup or a Jennifer Batten hairdo for sure. Good to see it's going to get classed up. I could see a darker more turqoisey lake placid-y blue transparent working well too.

It is going to be clear at the moment if I do the finishing. If someone else wants to do it for a reasonable price that color would be awesome too!

Re: Saving My Guitar

Well I got a few solid hours to work on it over the past two days. I will get some pics up tomorrow. I got the headstock and the body mostly shaped. I need to smooth out some edges, make a few of the lines flow better, and adjust the angle on some of the contours. It is coming along faster than I expected! It will still be a little while before my veneer gets here so that gives me plenty of time to get the body all sanded down. I'm not in a big hurry for this project and I am actually on budget for once! I have a few more things to get so hopefully I won't go over.

Re: Saving My Guitar

I really need to clean the workroom up.... meh.... I'll do it later.

Next up is a fill and drill on the neck (already started) and then to remove the frets (maybe)

I worked some more today and I have the body mostly cleaned up.

Remove the frets? Caught the fretless fever going around? The new countours look very interesting. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.

Something about the remaining bits of 80's finish I'm really liking. Could be they remind me of the art skateboards used to have during that time. Giving off that Gleaming the Cube x Police Academy 3 vibes.

The first guitar I ever built from scratch was a fretless. I would kinda like to get that guitar again, but something that is playable LOL. And yes I have caught the fever.

Re: Saving My Guitar

I added some back contours... kinda hard to tell in the picture.

I also have the headstock filled. Now it needs to be leveled, sanded, veneered, and drilled.

Time to rip out those frets! lol (When it comes time to do this I will be using something much smaller.)

Re: Saving My Guitar

The hole in your les paul reminds me of Les Paul's "The Log"

hmmm... I will have to find a picture.

That hole has been filled along with the neck bucker route. I have also added some more contours to the horn. Right now I need more sandpaper.

Re: Saving My Guitar

...may I suggest a Jag bridge to go with the Jag trem ;)

Actually I have a Schaller rollerbridge. Sorry? I need to fill the bridge holes. I have already drilled them bigger so I can dowel them.

ericmeyer4,a lot of work. Was it worth it?
If it turns out it will be. I still have a lot of work to go. Finish up the contours, level the top, add a veneer, redrill, finish, parts etc.

No way Slade, what he needs is whatever parts I'm selling in the trading post right now lol. I am proud to say that Eric does have a Strat jackplate of mine, so in my own special kind of way, Chops has made it to the project!
I do! But I don't know if I will get to use it :( Where I was going to but it needs to be a bit bigger and I am afraid it will look funny. I'll figure out a way to put it on there.

I am also ordering a neck from Musikraft. When that gets here I will need to fill the fretslots, reshape the headstock, epoxy the fingerboard, and finish the neck.

Off to the store to get more sandpaper. I will get some pictures here pretty soon after I get that bits I am working on now cleaned up.
