Say what? is this true? the JB is a DD with

Re: Say what? is this true? the JB is a DD with

I believe that was verified some time ago. JB and DD are wound the same, JB with an Alnico 5 magnet and a DD with a larger ceramic magnet.

really? so the JB is a DD lite? :laugh2:

Re: Say what? is this true? the JB is a DD with

Yeah, it's true. I wouldn't say that the JB is a DD lite though. The Custom is more of a DD lite.

JB > DD anyday for me ;).

Re: Say what? is this true? the JB is a DD with

Pretty much. Ready for your head to really spin? The Invader is the same thing with 3 magnets & big pole pieces :)

:smack: are you serious? :laugh2:
well in all fairness to duncan they all SOUND totally different from one another and that is what matters! :cool3:

Re: Say what? is this true? the JB is a DD with

no it's not

for one, both the DD and Invader are wound hotter. i dont know the gauge or type of the wire used for them, but that is also a factor.
if you'd put a ceramic on a JB, it wouldnt sound as the DD and vice versa. the invader is a totaly diferent thing too

could very well be right. I should have worded my original post different. It was never verified for sure as far as I know. There was a thread on this topic a few months ago.

+1. There's no explicit referece in SD web page that confirms that. If you check C5 description you'll see they say CC,C5 and Custom has the same windding. But it doesn't say anything about JB and DD being the same winding.

Re: Say what? is this true? the JB is a DD with

And just like guitars - I'm sure a mag type and windings and pole size all interact in freaky ways, just like scale length, fret wood and body wood do....I'm not surprised that they all sound different even though production is a little tweek.

Incorrect. All pickups are going to have different DC Resistances. I have a DD that's wound at 15.5 K, and a JB that's wound at 17.3K.

You are right, if you put a ceramic in a JB, it wouldn't sound like a DD. If you put a large ceramic magnet in though, one twice the girth of a standard, it would sound exactly like it. I've A/B'd the two pickups, a JB with a large ceramic from a DD, and an actual DD, and they are the same pickup.

Where di you get those PUs? You had them rewound?

I'm guessing they just took a multimmeter to them.

Time to change the battery in the meter. Duncan PUs are always dead on to what they advertise.

Re: Say what? is this true? the JB is a DD with

No they aren't. Take a multimeter and go into a store, and say you're looking for a specific output in a pickup. Measure 4 brand new SD pickups side by side, of the same model and color. Each will read differently.

Re: Say what? is this true? the JB is a DD with

This is my interpretation of Evans explanation of why every pickup has a slightly different DC resistance.
Their wire is +- 5% tolerance (guage size), and they are wound to an exact number of turns, that should result in a specific dc resistance, so accordingly they will have about a 5% tolerance in DC resistance from the published spec.

Manufacturing tolerances (more specifically: Wire) ....I´ve had factory new JBs ranging pretty exactly from 16 -17K ;)

And IIRC it was confirmed by Jessica (SD A+R) some time ago that the JB, Invader and DD are in fact the exact same wind with different magnets and (in the Invader) different polepieces. Although I cannot verify this information, as it is second hand.....

Re: Say what? is this true? the JB is a DD with

This has been talked to death guys...the JB, DD, and Invader all 3 use the same coils...the differences in DC is just a difference from pickup to pickup

Well, I went measure 5 JBs in my shop and they all hit 16.4K. Some on those JBs are 10 years old. That's what I'm looking for when I buy a JB so it better not be overwound. If Fralin can overwind by around 5% then Duncan better be able to hit it's advertised mark ;)
