Scale most common in punk rock?

What scale do most punk bands use to write riffs and solos? Im really into bands like No use for a Name, Nofx, Blink 182 (buddha-Enema), Pennywise.

Sorry, Never taken a guitar lesson, just learned mostly by tabs and Im wanting to learn some theory behind those tabs. So what scale do you recommend for me to learn, according to the style of music I like?

Minor pentatonic won't lead you wrong. You'll find the notes of a minor pentatonic in blues, 60s rock, punk, country, straight forward heavy metal...
RATM guitar is like all in minor pentatonic. ACDC is like all minor pentatonic. Misfits. Sex Pistols. Black Keys. White Stripes. Minor Pentatonic = rock and roll.
Blackened metal styles, prog rock and metal...those drift off into other stuff. I'm only just now kind of caring about scale work 25 years into playing.

keep in mind that the bands you'r talking about often work their lead lines to mirror the melody of the vocal.

(Having played bass in a punk band in the Matt Freeman style) I will say the Major scale and Mixolydian scale, followed by the Minor scale. Have you learned the concept of Scale Degrees yet? (I IV V vi, etc.)

I was just gonna say, in all of those bands, all the songs that immediately come to me use Mixolydian and Major with a minor hanging around. Good call, glad you beat me to it. Dorian is also thrown in there a bit too.

Those bands played mostly in straight major keys. It is a very large part of why they sound like the ****in' Archies.

Good on ya for wanting to learn some theory, it is knowledge you will use for your entire playing lifetime!

I would recommend approaching it from a slightly different angle, however, and learn the Major scale, Natural Minor scale, and all of the modes. You do not need to get fancy and learn every scale position just yet. Keep it in the key of C for now, which has no sharp or flat notes.

You will notice that the first mode (Ionian) is the same as the Major scale and the 6th mode (Aeolian) is the same as the Natural Minor.

Each mode uses the same notes as the major scale, you are just starting and ending on a note OTHER than the first note in the key you are playing in.

With the tabs or whatever in hand, play each mode over a C pedal tone. Note how each mode changes the feel of the pedal tone. Then do the opposite -- play each mode starting in C, this will create a lot of sharp and flat notes (called Accidentals). Note how THESE change the tone of the pedal note. I would advise taking notes.

Then you are ready to experiment with modes over your chord progressions. Using your notes, you can use Mode X for a happy sound, Mode Y for a sad sound, mode Z for an aggressive/driving sound, etc.

Wot's wrong with The Archies ??? Some of us have spent a lot of time working to get that style and sound happening (Metallica tried, but failed, because they are useless). Tom Waits wears his Archies influences with pride, as do Zeppelin, Opeth and J.S. Bach.

If you listen, closely to the genre the most popular scale used in punk rock is the ichthyes scale. It has more of a hook.

I would think the most commonly used scale in punk rock actually is a freight scale to weigh their groupies.

I'm on the same boat as Aceman here but....

For leads and such tends to be pentatonic, but usually following the vocal melody.

As for riffs/ chords, learning the bands you like songs will teach you many of the ones they use often. For more Ramone's style pop punk (and throughout all punk really) you see ALOT of what I call punk T's and Punk L's.

ex.

T- DABG
L- ADE

You can use these in any order as well, and just rearrange for your other riffs in the song. Any more than 4 chords in the song and you can just get the **** out. Then its all about the melody!

major and minor only. but different modes are used more for each band. I hear Aolian in Pennywise for instance. just learn their solos and then place them into the mode grid. pentatonic is encompassed anyway.
