im trying to learn scales but there are so many what are the essential scales i should use for rock guitar

essentialy
pentatonic minor major (and blues with the added flat 5th), and regular minor and major scales.
harmonic minor is used some also.

the best way to learn initially might be to learn the patterns of a major scale in several positions on the fretboard ... by learning these fingerings, you can learn to move them around the fretboard for different keys ... and also, by learning to emphasize different notes in the scale, you can learn to apply them as modes ... after you are comfortable with a few, you can find ways to connect the patterns you know to create opportunities to slide up and down the neck for longer melodic lines
same thing goes for the minor and major pentatonic (they are related just the same as major and minor diatonic)
