Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

Schaller = $90ish

Fender Schaller = $65ish

Difference? Guessing Fender bought licensing and are having them produced overseas? (Meaning not Germany.)

That's correct. The Fender Locking Tuners have been made by Ping instead of Schaller for quite a while. I don't remember the exact time frame, but it's been at least a decade, probably longer.

They also mount differently. The Fender uses two pins and the Schaller uses a single set screw on the side.

If it's a Fender neck, I'd stick with the Fender Schallers for the mounting and logo resale advantages -They're very good tuners.

If not, Schallers are certainly great -I think Sperzells are even better. But any of those will not disappoint.

The original Fender locking tuners that appeared on the Strat Plus in the late 80s were made by Schaller and used the two-pin mounting design. Later on the manufacturing moved to Ping, but the design stayed essentially the same and the two tuners are interchangeable.

The Fender Schallers are great tuners; unfortunately the Ping-made ones are a bit hit and miss. The good ones are every bit as good as the Schallers, but unfortunately I've run into a few that were junk.

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

i have the brushed ones on my Candy Apple next to my bed
and I had the F logo chrome ones on my MIM that the neighbor kid now has

I liked the chrome F logo ones better
they were staggered
and they were 46 bucks on Amazon last year

the brushed ones were about 67 or so some time back

I have the brushed Fender/Schaller on my Warmoth. I like em, but wish they were just a little lighter.

I'm a weirdo. If you don't have Fender neck, I would not do the Fender tuners because you would have to drill two holes instead of one. That's just me.

You dont have to drill holes
When you tighten the collar, the pins bite in on their own

Uh, I would not recommend this method. You are supposed to drill alignment holes.

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

Same as alignment screws, you def wanna drill pilot holes other wise you'll potentially split wood and strip stuff.

Just because ehdwuld doesn't mean ehdshould. :lmao:

because your posts won't sit perfectly perpendicular -they usually sit slightly cocked.

Never drilled a hole
Never had any problems

You guys are making it harder than it needs to be

Small screws and nails do not require pilot holes

This is the way myths get started

No, the pins are blunt and can absolutely split a headstock. Not to mention the force needed to crush pins that size could break a tuner.

Maybe you are thinking the tiny little **** on the some sealed tuners?

What are you talking about crushing pins

The wood compresses

Not the metal

Cmon man

You tighten the nut on the front
The pins press into the wood
Wood is soft
Even hard rock maple
Not brittle
Wont splinter
Wont shatter

Metal is hard wont cruch
Wont bend

Dude you do nice work
I'm impressed with it
But I dont think we are talking g about the sa.e things
