Schaller strap button. coming loose?

had this happen the first time last year. picked up a set of Schaller strap buttons for the strap lock system. one kept coming out, as in, the button would slip out of the locking mechanism in the strap. tried several locks on several straps, and it was definitely that button. dumped that set of buttons and moved on.

bought about 2-3 sets of schaller strap buttons from a different source. a button popped out earlier this week. thought it might've been me, as I couldn't get it to repeat... but the same button did it again today. today's slip resulted in a divot on the edge of a guitar near the jack, which is uncool.

so... has anyone else had this happen with newer schaller buttons? I've been using them since the 80s. only needed to get more within the past year. could it just be the newer ones? or has there been slight changes where the newer buttons don't like the older strap locks as well? e-mailed the supplier I've been getting them from, but I also thought I'd check with you cats as well.

thanks!

Re: Schaller strap button. coming loose?

I've used only the ones I bought new retail from 2002 to about 2008. Never had any problems.

Re: Schaller strap button. coming loose?

I have never had any issue with mine... That sucks though. I wish I could be of more help.

Re: Schaller strap button. coming loose?

If its slipping out, do you have the opening of the cup on the strap facing up or down? It should be facing up.

Make sure the buttons you got are actually Schaller brand Amit not Schaller style. I haven't had a problem like that in 20 years of use.

yeah, I've been using them since '85 and only needed to get more within this past year for some new additions to the herd. ErikH, I do have the cup facing up, but when I'm doing moves that would make both DLR and Vai jealous, I gots to have my mojo movin'. lol!

Re: Schaller strap button. coming loose?

I always secured the strap around the button with a stapler or with some sewing.

It really depends on the strap, I have some that the Schallers just repell.

Hahahaha. If I try to do moves like that I'll pull something and fall down in pain. Lol

Re: Schaller strap button. coming loose?

I've had several Schaller locks fail as well as the Dunlop locks. The little twist lock discs aree cool but will fail as well and the rubber ring, Grolsh beer cap/Souldier locks are killer but a pain to get on and off and if you gig and your guitar won't fit in the case with the strap on this can be an issue.

So...I switched to the old school leather locks a few years back and have yet to have an issue...

Re: Schaller strap button. coming loose?

I have never had an issue with my Schaller strap locks. I did get some cheaper Schaller style strap locks for one of my guitars and will say that those strap buttons do have smoother edges than the genuine Schallers--they are smoother as in I think they would be more likely to slip than the genuine Schallers.

Re: Schaller strap button. coming loose?

I've got Schallers on a dozen of my guitars and never had a problem. Can't imagine that they would ever come apart for any reason if they were mounted correctly and used correctly.

That being said, if you were using a very old strap lock with a newer button, it could be that they have changed something in the dimentions that make the button fit too loose in the lock. See if an old button fits into a new lock.

In any case, I would be inclined to make sure the buttons and locks came in a matching set...or be relenquished to having some banged and broken guitars.
