Schecter km7-mkii Low B tuning issue

Hey guys,

I have a Schecter KM-7 MKII and am having an issue with the low B string. It will say its in tune, no matter what tuner I use, but always sounds sharp when played open or fretted (compared to the other strings) I always have to de-tune it down a little until it sounds right. Also, it seems to not be in tune with itself as it will say it's in tune open, but the 12th harmonic is slightly flat.

This is a 26.5" scale guitar and I currently use 9-48 with a 60 for the low B and play in standard tuning. I've tried a 58, 60, and 62 gauge and they all have the same issue.

The guitar is intonated properly (I believe) as it shows its in tune when plucked open and fretting the 12th fret, but again the 12 fret harmonic actually shows a little flat... Any clue on whats going on or how to fix this?

Re: Schecter km7-mkii Low B tuning issue

Since the harmonic is not fretted, it has by definition double the frequency of the open note. So there is no chance on earth that it is flat. Now since you have checked the intonation (check it also on the last fret) only thing I can think of :
- action height
- you pluck too hard

Okay, but what if I'm telling you that the harmonic IS flat? Not trying to sound like a dick, but it's what's happening. That's why I'm worried something is actually wrong with the guitar itself. As far as action height, would you say it's too low or to high? I tried raising it some but no luck.

Also, I tried plucking hard and soft. It's still sounds sharp compared to the other strings either way. (tuning both hard and soft as well)

Set the intonation so that the harmonic at the 12th fret is dead on. Then check how the fretted note sounds.

Pinching at the nut? The bridgesaddle? Adjustments of your string saddles may help in solving your problem. Burring on saddles & string nut ( pinching) can cause this problem.

Light filing is all you need to try. Don't go gung- ho on this though.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! You're a proud owner of a compensated nut. Says so right there in the specs.

Open notes and harmonics have a different effective scale length vs. all fretted notes. Yay.

But on the bright side, your newbie chords are gonna sound so awesome...not that it matters on a seven string geared for chugga chugga

Re: Schecter km7-mkii Low B tuning issue

PS lowering action and resetting the affected string' saddles halfway back in the direction of 26.5" actual from their current position might balance this a bit.

No...wait... maybe RAISE action? Compensated nut compensates for high action and heavy handed fretting, which you seemingly didnt do but instead double compensated with the saddle adjustment? Or something idk Im on to something but I'm 2 beers late to do spatial reasoning right now

I forgot to mention another possibility : if the string has non-uniform mass this would be a likely cause. Does the problem persist with a new low-B string?

BTW, this looks like an amazing 7-stringer !! Congrats!
