School me on 7 string guitars...

I've been playing them more often lately and am thinking about a well in the future purchase. I'm not sure I'd like a Floyd type tremolo on it (I'm not much of a floyd player) and the budget I'd have wouldnt really allow a guitar with a great level tremolo.

What guitars can you guys recommend?

Re: School me on 7 string guitars...

What do you require of a seven stringer? Greater frequency range? More playing positions? Could you cover what you require by down tuning, with a whammy pedal or, say, a Roland VG device?

I played some of the "cleaner" music with one this week and enjoyed the lower register. I liked the droning B string as opposed to the higher E.

Re: School me on 7 string guitars...

Why not look into a Baritone then if you like the Low B unless you just want more range in general.

Re: School me on 7 string guitars...

They have one more string than a 6 string guitar. Aiiiii pretty exciting.

But i think i would prefer to extend my range in different ways.

Re: School me on 7 string guitars...

Schecter and LTD offer options; Ibanez started the whole thing, and they offer a variety of hardtail 7s. Fyi, the Ibanez necks are still fairly skinny, not sure if you're into that.

Well not really "schoolin" BUT Rondo has some super affordable 7's: http://www.rondomusic.com/7string.html

I'm probably gettin' the Grendel 727 Black in a few days.

Seems like a lot of guitar for the $$. Of course, you'll need to drop in a set of these new SDs (Nazgûl/Sentient) pups ;).

Re: School me on 7 string guitars...

How about Ibanez RGD7421 which has slightly longer neck (26.5")? Pretty intriguing I'd say.

Or this year released PRS SE Custom 24 7 ...

The Stirling JP70 is $550 @ Guitar center before coupons, they will have the PRS SE Custom 24 7 for $709 in July. I'm gonna try them back to back before I pick one.

+1

I heard agile guitars seven stringers are really good axes for the money. Made in Korea and in almost every flavour you'd want them, plus they are spec'd to the balls. You should check them out.

If they aren't really your style I'd go with the JP 70 or an Ibanez 7-string.

Re: School me on 7 string guitars...

The new Ibanez Iron Label series are quite nice. Jackson also brought new cheap sevens to the market, they are looking good.

Agile might still be your best bet.

Re: School me on 7 string guitars...

AZ. If you just want the lower register, change tunings. IMO, the short scale of the HH Jaguar rules it out as a candidate.

Baritone extended scale guitar is a good suggestion. Another is to get a five string bass and restring it EADGC. The upper register will be in the baritone/guitar registers. Active pickups would give you squeaky clean sounds. The larger strings, spaced further apart, are easier to play. The distorted sounds are eeeeeeeeevil.

Perhaps, you should save up for a Gibson SG with robot tuning?

In the meantime, check out the open tunings of Joni Mitchell on her website. http://jonimitchell.com/music/tuningpatterns.cfm

I think the Scecter ATX stuff is really good. i don't know what your budget is, but they are well worth it.

Hey AZ!

I have bought myself a Ibanez RGD7421 like shown above for 539$+txs. To resume, the neck feels perfectly great (the slim ibanez neck matches perfectly the wide fretboard for me and I was used to PRS wide fat profile.), but the stock pickups do not respond so well to the lower register and I've had few problems with the intonation on the low B. The finish has few flaws but nothing dramatic! Get yourself a nice cheap 7 to see how it fits your inspiration!
