School me on on SG's

Re: School me on on SG's

I've had a couple SGs and neck dive is only a problem on the ones with big, fat tuners. The best balanced I've had was a Burny. I figure that's because it had the small Gotoh Klusons, which are still even a good bit smaller and lighter than the Gibson versions. I've been pretty lucky. GOTW 67 P90 SG, Worn Brown, and that Greco and they were all pretty nice. Of those, I wish I still had the P90. The Greco had a weird neck profile that I didn't like (but other than that, was a spot-on 61RI copy).

Re: School me on on SG's

My best advise for Gibson shopping is to bypass the budget models and sell, scrimp, save for the cheapest Standard on Craigslist.

That goes for SG's and LP's. You're usually figuring around $800 for an SG Std. and $1300 for a LP Std.

That's not to say there aren't gems amongst the $500 range, but heck, if you're serious, wait till you can get the real deal.

I love how people always quote these insanely low prices for used gear. Honestly, are you guys buying stolen goods or what? If these deals are for real, and it is not for one with its headstock snapped off, buy me an excellent condition Standard for 600, and I will send you the extra 25.00 to ship it to me.

It won't be in excellent condition at that price...but I've seen lots of played-in "natural relic" SG Standards for $500-$650.

Its my job. I work at a huge freakin guitar store.

And my price on the G400 is not exagerrated. I have only seen them sell for $200 or less. The guitar economy is down and people selling used gear are accepting less money. Bluebook on a 59 burst waz $250k in 2011....its only $80k now.

Re: School me on on SG's

Been wanting an SG for a while now too, the upper fret access is just so amazing... great tone... I want a standard...

Re: School me on on SG's

I have several SGs and several SG type guitars and love them all. Great tone and very fun to play.

Re: School me on on SG's

Vipers and SG's, yeah, kinda different. You'll have to play them both and see what you prefer. Vipers are more techy shred, SG's are more stoner doom.

Buying a new guitar is kinda like buying a new car, buy used, save $$$.

SG standards at least have a 498T for a bridge pickup, so they're useable. If you're gonna swap pickups out anyway and just don't really need binding and fancy inlays look for an older SG Special (NOT faded). These all have the 490T, which doesn't suit me in any way, but will all be a couple-three hundred less than a standard. PLAY IT FIRST, some have really fat necks, which you just might not get along with.

Fadeds, meh, maybe you'll find one you like, every one I've looked at was obviously 5 pieces of wood and substandard.

SG's do feel weird standing up (to me), everything seems shifted toward your left. The neck dive can be fixed by moving the forward strap button, but mine doesn't bother me.

As for LTD's, the older lower end models were made in Korea, these are usually really good for dirt cheap, but that's been at least 10 years, so they might not show up as much these days. The Indonesia models are hit or miss, and I've personally not played a decent China built LTD. The high end LTD are still Korean made and are usually pretty good.

An ESP will be about as good a guitar as you'll find, as long as you like EMG's.

I'm sure as a trade-in toward something else in the store, you can get them for those prices, and I'm sure you can get a beat up, fret-bare standard as cheap as you want, but I'm talking about a regular consumer and playable very good quality guitar.

Looks like if the guitar economy was so bad you would see them going for those prices on Ebay all the time, and yet, this is never the case when you actually follow the ads and look closely. They are almost double the prices you are quoting, or they have significant flaws. Like I said, find me an excellent condition standard for $500 and I will also pay the $30 extra for your store to ship it to me. I will also take 3 excellent condition G400's for $80 each.

Re: School me on on SG's

My budget is probably around 400-500. I have played the faded cherry SG and absolutely loved it. Is the extra 2-3 hundred dollars really worth it? But I guess the whole"go try it"factor plays a big part.

-gk

I got my gibson sg standard for $850 - it was new but got it thru guitar center - someone returned it

look out for those deals, it is sooo worth it!!! :cool2:

Re: School me on on SG's

Do it! SG's are one of the great guitar designs.

Absolutely. Very, very few guitars can match the playability of a good SG. Super versatile, too. They can go from big, fat and warm to cutting like a razor. Everyone should have one.

Re: School me on on SG's

They are definitely up there with Teles and 335-type guitars in the versatility department. Great tones from face ripping crunch to mellow jazz. But if you show up with one to a jazz jam, you'll get some looks for sure! Being that they look like Lucifer's pitchfork, they are some very intimidating looking guitars! :D

Re: School me on on SG's

I have/tried a few variations: the Viper LTD 400, Gibson SG faded, Gibson SG standard, and Epi G400.

To make a long story short:

1. forget the Viper. its nothing like an SG.

2. save up for the Gibson SG standard. you'll be glad you did.

3. SG faded's are great guitars - if you can cherry pick amongst several. When I bought my SG faded, I made the poor guy open 3 boxes and watch me inspect each one before choosing. check the fit, finish, and frets ends.

4. Get the Epi if you're on a budget. The Epi SG is one of the best values in a guitar IMO. albeit there is obvious compromises, but not in tone.

Occasionally we see eye-to-eye on something Kam, and this is one of them. You've got the entire neck at your disposal with an SG, and a body with some of the sleekest curves you can get in an instrument. They're great with HB's and P-90's. I don't know about Ireland, but here in Florida SG's are under-represented, at least by blues/classic rock players. Not seen nearly enough. The ones I do see on stage always sound great, an oasis in a sea of Strats. In spite of the long neck, they're not a problem for short or young people to play, as Angus has proven.

Heh no man... I've had a few old but playable Standards sell between $500-$650. Its not an every day thing but neither is buying a guitar... I'm advising the dude to take his time and find a deal.

Don't understand why you're being so combative but next time we get a good SG for cheap I'll PM you.

Re: School me on on SG's

Sg's are awesome, P90's sound just plain rock or get a bucker loaded one and throw in a C5, C8 or a Brobucker and you've got one great sounding, sexy and yet down right mean looking guitars known to mankind!

Re: School me on on SG's

I Like knowing I own one and staring at it,more than playing it....Lol

Re: School me on on SG's

I think SG's are one of the best buys out there. For about the same price as an american standard strat or tele, you get all the "Gibson" stuff people are after: scale length, 2 hb's or p90's, higher end materials and hardware. Of course, if you hate the pu's, you'll change them anyway, but if you don't, an SG special is a bargain: by the time you upgrade the hardware and pu's on a $500 chinese or Korean guitar, you get pretty close to the SG at a sale price, and that doesn't take into account the nicer wood and finish.

Let's hope they never get as popular as LP's or the price will jump with a prestige markup.

Re: School me on on SG's

dont call it an "SG" unless its a gibson ;)

/QUOTE]

an 80,000 59? Please find me one of these. I'd mortgage my house, buy one, and live in the tenderloin.
Your stats are pretty badly skewed. 800K maybe...IF you can find one, cause none of the good ones are really for sale anymore.
maybe a beat to **** pieced together 1/4 original one ( like most for sale ..whats left of em) is 200-250K at best.
By the way, why play a "bunch" of 600 dollar SG's. They are all the same except maybe the set up. There MAY be some degree of difference at the custom shop level..Will you never learn? I've been arguing with you about this for over 5 years now.
Anyway, SG's are neck heavy, and all their headstocks are busted.
