School me on Trainwreck amps.

Re: School me on Trainwreck amps.

If you played violin in a mediocre orchestra like the Denver Symphony you'd have to invest $50K or much, much, much more for a decent Italian or French fiddle. http://cgi.ebay.com/Old-19th-centur...&_trkparms=72:1240|66:1|65:12|39:1|240:1308If If you you were a soloist touring with major orchestras you'd be looking at closer to a million for a great Italian violin.

The majority of musicians in the big orchestras actually hire/rent the instrument because they can't afford to buy one. Insane.

For a top notch Italian (Stradivari, Guarneri del Gesu) you're looking at $1-2m for sure as you said.

Plus, you have to be a very well respected violinist or cellist to even be offered 1 to play. Perlamn plays a 294 year old Stradivari called "The Soil" & Sir Yehudi Menuhin played it before Perlman so that's the level you're looking at. Gil Shaham also plays a Strad.

Menuhin & Perlman played Guarneri's as well as so have Heifetz, Szeryng, Ysaye and other top level players so no hack gets a top Italin violin! Ha ha.

Re: School me on Trainwreck amps.

i was under the impression that there was only like 100 real trainwrecks

I'm really not sure of the total number Jeremy, but I know he made a few different models. I remember reading that number, but I don't remember where. Regardless of the actual number there are very few and that also adds to the expense.

Lew brings up a couple of great points...... We are spoiled. A great guitar, not a good guitar but a great guitar can be had for under 5K. Not so with other instruments. A student model upright bass runs about 3K. So if I had the money (which I don't) I would invest in a Trainwreck. 25 to 30K today is a lot of cash no question, but in 10 years it will probably be worth double that!

Edit: copied from the Trainwreck sight. 100 seems to be the number of amp Ken Fisher made. You are right Jeremy

How do I get a Trainwreck Amp?

Once in a blue moon they show up on eBay. There are only about one hundred of them so they are hard to find.
How much do they cost?
An Express sold for $27,000 in June of 2005. A Liverpool sold on eBay for $25,500 (plus $125 shipping) in June of 2007. Offers of $30,000 have been made on Trainwreck Rockets but these offers have never been accepted. Ken may have been the only human in the history of this planet to have built amps that were worth this much even when a particular amp had not been touched by someone famous.
Why do they cost so much?
The cost of Trainwreck amps is set by the law of supply and demand. They sound incredible and rarely require service.

Re: School me on Trainwreck amps.

I know Mark Knopfler plays one a lot last few years on his recordings.
My dream amp is Komet Concorde but that's not entirely TW from what I understand ... but Concorde is not nearly as expensive.

Re: School me on Trainwreck amps.

My whole point is that IMHO a Trainwreck (or a Dumble for that matter) is not any more of a magic amp that a good old tweed Fender, a Plexi Marshall or an old Vox...

Those amps cost what they cost simply based on supply and demand...

What about prices for Komet's?

What about them??

To be clear, Im not trying to link the price of a Wreck to anything about the amp itself...

Komet's are cool amps, nothing completely mind blowing IMO but cool. Do I think they are worth what they sell for...no not really but I am of the opinion that about 85% of all amps being sold today are overpriced!

Wow, so Ultra Sound had 10% (now 9%) of all Trainwrecks in their possession at 1 time? :eyecrazy:

They must be laughing if they sell all of them-

Armida- $33,500 (Liverpool)
Jane- $33,500 (Express)
Waif- $33,500 (Liverpool)
Cherry Lynn: $35,500 (Express)
Kim- $36,500 (Express)
Marg- $36,500 (Liverpool)
Marisa- $37,500 (Express)- SOLD
Suzanne- $37,500 (Express)
Sarah- $39,500 (Express)
Marcy- $44,500 (Rocket)

I wonder if every time 1 sells, the price of the remaining wrecks go up slightly?

Re: School me on Trainwreck amps.

I just read the interview in VG with Brad Paisley. Now this guy has some serious amps. He tours with 10 heads. One is a Wreck Liverpool. He says he uses it for hi overdriven tones. He has a pretty complex rig considering. He is mostly playing thru his Dr. Z Stingray, The Liverpool two Zwrecks 2 Bruno Underground 30's and a Cowtipper. Each goes into its own cabinet of different configuration of speakers. WOW!

I just read that article, cool articel all in all but the funny thing about Brad is that, and let me be clear and honest before I say this...I am not what you''d call familar with his work and I don't own any of his albums but on to my thought...Brad has the same tone everytime I hear him...I don't know why he even bothers wiht all that gear...it always comes out the same!

haha ... a contrarian view, but I think you have a point! :)

he has said he was influenced by John Jorgenson's tele-thru-an-AC30 tone, but IMO, Brad's tone is much closer to regular tele/ Twin twang tone than John's was.

Thats SO funny...I know Brad's main squeeze is that old 62 AC30 but I've always said that he sounded much more like a Tele into a BF Fender tone!!! A nice Tele, an analog delay and a compressor into a BF Deluxe or Vibrolux is what I always think about when I hear Brad play...I remember actually being really surprised to find most of it is an AC-30!
