School me on trem stabilizers

I’d like to use my Ibanez in a way that I can stabilize the trem to change tunings but also quickly free it up (I guess when tuned to standard) to use the whammy. Possible?

I have not found one I liked very much. Vai uses one that was made by Ibanez but I am not sure they make them anymore.

But they are easy enough to buy

i use somthing very simular. The great thing is you can make adjustments without removing.. Also if you add a bit of extra presure you can still slightly pull up.

The spring version

If our definitions are the same, keep it in the center position. With a floating trem, when you rest your hand on the bridge to palm mute or for any other reason, you can push the guitar sharp while doing it. The block prevents the tremolo from moving in that direction.The spring versions of these blocks will allow you to pull the trem up/sharp with a little more pressure.

Oh gotcha. I guess I should try one to see how it affects the feel. Breaking a string with a floating trem indeed sucks, but I am pretty used to putting my palm on the bridge when bending.

Yeah my main issue would be doing drop d or e flat alternate tunings. I want the bridge to stay in place. But would be nice while in standard to be able to use my whammy bar

I used to use a "Tremsetter" back in the day on a Kramer that was a little hinky. Worked pretty well. I rarely used the term, so the loss of Trem subtlety didn't bother me, but really enjoyed the gain in stability.

There is always set flush/down so only dips are possible depending on your stylings. I could live with that.

When you use the trem, does it 'click' on, or is it smooth?

Going forward, there will be no difference. If you have the spring unit and pull up, it takes a bit more pressure, and the range is much less, but there is no "click." I have mine on the B.C. Rich with the Sophia and would not play that guitar without it.

there is a thud when it returns to the stop

I'd guess I'd have to try before I buy. I am so used to laying my palm down on the bridge to do a double stop.
