scpb-2 vs scpb-3

I am currently using the scpb-2 as a pup upgrade on my '78 Musicmaster bass. It's a good upgrade but I thought an scpb-3 would be still better because of the larger pole pieces. But when I put it in, the output was pitiful compared to the scpb-2. Can't really use the scpb-3 pup. I had my GK 400RB maxed and output still weak. I double checked my connections and they look fine. I took it out and put the scpb-2 back in. Why the big difference? I thought the scpb-3 would have better output than it demonstrated. What is up with that? Should I try again? Bob

The SCPB should have a little more output. You might check it wiht a meter to see if the resistance is up to spec.

Hey Black Rose. Thanks for the reply. I was very dismayed by the lack output from that scpb-3. Makes me think something is wrong with it. I don't have a meter to check it though. I put that scpb-2 back in and will go with that until I can get this figured out. That 2 puts it out. I thought the 3 would be better still, but it sucks. The 3 is unusable to be.

FYI anybody who is interested. I just spoke with SD support. The guy thinks there is definately something wrong with the pup and are sending me another. He said it should have good output and compare well with the scpb-2. He also explained that the scpb-3's higher output is from the magnets where the scpb-2's is from the coils. More coils on the 2 but bigger magnets on the 3. Thoughts?

Re: scpb-2 vs scpb-3

I received the replacement pup today and put it in this evening. It sounds good. That first scpb-3 was definately a dog. Gonna send it and the scpb-2 back and play the bass like it is for awhile. Quarter Pounder scpb-3 is a geat upgrade for a Musicmaster bass IMO.

Hey bassdog54. I have a couple of 1973 Fender Musicmaster Basses myself.
They both have the stock pick-ups. I was wondering how you consider your upgrade to the scpb-3 now ? I see this thread is a year and a half old now.
Anyone else, please chime in if you own a Fender Musicmaster bass...................Thanks
