Screamin Demon/Full Shred?

Has anyone used a Demon/Shred-n combination? I was looking at the SD Tonechart and noted that the Screamin Demon has similar attributes of the Custom, 'cept for the magnet type.

What does the Alnico magnet do in difference to a ceramic magnet?

I've read some posts here saying the Full Shred is a good pickup to use for several styles of music than just metal, as the name may lead one to think. I'm wondering if it's a good pup to use in the neck of a Les Paul for some good vintage clean rock tones, as well as having a little kick when boosted or distorted? I was also thinking that it would be wise to keep the magnet types the same in a set, and since I really like the Custom type of output, that the Screamin Demon would be a good match for the Full Shred.
I have a Schecter C-1 Classic with SD Alnico magnet pickups in it, and they sound excellent. I've thought about putting the JB/Jazz set in a Les Paul I just bought, but I already have a solid body archtop with 'em in that C-1, so I thought it would be nice to mix it up a little with this newest addition and give it a little flair, yet maintain great clean tones. I have an Epi LP that has a Custom/PG set in it, and like that sound pretty good. But if need be, I can always put the PG/b I have on the shelf back into the bridge of the Epi and use the Custom for this new Pauly.

Or, maybe I should just use a Custom I already have in a guitar I don't use much anymore (Epi G400) and add a Duncan Distortion to it, and slap those in this Pauly...keeping it an all-ceramic set.

Decisions, decisions....

Any thoughts?

I tried to decipher the difference between pickups at the soundbytes page, but as you all know, it's too difficult to go by those to imagine what the pickup will sound like in your axe. That's one thing I wish this website would do....improve the sound samples of it's line of pickups with different guitars. There's enough of us here using SD's, Seymour could get plenty of soundbytes from forum users alone.

Hey, great to hear from you Racer-buddy! How you doin?

Yeah, I agree. The names of many SD pickups have mislead me to think that they are what they are called. I guess I forgot the bottom line that all pickups, no matter what they're called, are still magnets, bobbins, and wire all wrapped up into a neat little package.
It's all just a matter of determining what kind of magnet and output a person desires.

Take care, Racer!

Re: Screamin Demon/Full Shred?

Not to bad BOB, but thanks for asking. I find the FS way to high and shrill and lacking in the bottom end but if thats the tone your after its all good. The Deamon is good enough on its own, wether it be in the bridge or neck. A Custom/Deamon or Deamon/59 might be a better combo. Just play around a while and get some more info. Take care my friend, RACER X/GARY.

Glad to hear it, 'bro. You're in my thoughts.
That's what I was concerned about in regards to the tone of the FS. I'm not looking for shrillness, just good treble for a neck pickup with a slightly less amount of bass. I want the neck pup to stand out on it's own as used both in rhythm and lead. Of course the bridge pup sound has to be the next notch up for great lead tones, but overlaps somewhat with the neck pickup for good rhythm harmonics.

The 59 and Jazz are both great neck pups as well as the Deamon, all will give you a big fat warm tone as well as good harmonics, palm mutes, etc. But IMHO the Custom/59 would be a better and more versetile combo. AS the DD/59 and JB/Jazz.

Midnight, my Vancouver brother.

I've got a black standard-spaced Demon bridge sittin' on the shelf. The lead is a little short, so it might be a stretch for your LP, but you might be able to extend the leads. If you want to give it a try, let me know. If you like it, we can work something out. If not, you can just return it. I'm jonesin' to unload it for a Hot Rails neck or a AP2H neck.

JammerMatt....'bro! It's been awhile since the last time we rapped, good to hear from ya.
In regards to the Demon, I'm still gathering my info together. I keep changing my mind about what combo I want to use but I haven't ruled out the Demon in the bridge. I'm leaning heavily right now towards a Jazz in the neck. I know what that pickup and the JB can do in my Schecter C-1, which is a thinner-bodied guitar than a Gibson Les Paul. So I'm thinking in my Pauly they would sound a little warmer and richer in tone, which might just be the ticket. But as I said before, I'd rather have a different but classic rock sound to this Gibby, and the Jazz/Demon might be sweet. The only issue I may have about the whole arrangement is the fact that since this LP is ebony-finished I'd like to keep the nickel-covered pickup look, which I think sets the guitar off since it's a Studio model....know what I mean? It's gotta have a little bit of flair to it's appearance.
Right now I have a line on a covered JB, which would work good in that axe for sound and looks. But as I said earlier, I'm still gathering my info.
I'll definitely keep your offer in mind, Matt, if I decide to go with a Demon w/o covers. Thanks. What are you asking for it, by the way? PM me if you want.

Re: Screamin Demon/Full Shred?

Midnight,

Gotcha, no problem. You probably cannot go wrong with that Jazz. Tell me how you like it, I'm considering one for my LP.

How about that 4th of July, eh? I looked over your direction and it looked like Baghdad over there.

Yeah, it was pretty loud from where I live. I could see the tops of the big ones when they went off....I live about 15 blocks away from the fort on the north side of 4th PL.

Will do about the Jazz, if and when it happens, buddy.
