Screamin Demon not my thing?

I have recently put a SH12 screamin demon in the bridge of my SG copy and found it really brittle with distortion, grainy and trebly it lacked mids, and sounded even worse clean. I couldn't get it to sound good in any position even if I raised or lowered the pickup. Is it supposed to sound like this?, I bought it used with the model number 12B on the back, I am assuming it is the right model.

Re: Screamin Demon not my thing?

12B is correct for a Demon. Sorry, but that's about as far as my knowledge goes on them.

That doesn't sound right. I'm not a huge fan of the Demon, but one thing it is, is a good sounding pickup. Check the wiring, check that you have it turned the right way (screws toward the bridge). I know this sounds basic, but you never know.

The SD is a pretty bright pickup, but crunchy...It also surprised me how much this pickup cleans up and articulates...You might really like an A2 or A3 in that pickup...I had an A2 magnet in mine for awhile and I Liked it but It was in a strat and I started missing the tightness of notes and the clean clarity of the SD with the A5...I still use this pickup in my black strat but I Kept the stock A5 in it...

Re: Screamin Demon not my thing?

Most pickups sound differant in differant guitars. Could be the SD is not the tonality you prefer...especially in your guitar and through your amp. Just try something differant until you get one that turns you on. If you want more mids, try an a2 magnet pickup like the Custom Custom...or an overwound a5 magnet pickup like the JB. I have a feeling you'd like the JB. Lew

Unless you're still good with the Duncan swap policy, why not just try a magnet swap...Try the A3 first...

What Amp are you playing thru? I got Demons in both of my mahagony SG's and they rule. Plenty of tight bottom, perfect mids and brite top. These pup's flat out growl. They're not as brite as a '59 bridge, but sound fuller. Open chords sound full and Distorted you can hear every string. I've noticed with this pup that chords from the 12th fret down the neck are crunchy and from the 12th fret up the neck they sing.

I play thru a fat tube half stack that really brings out the best in this pup. I've never played it thru a solid state or small combo amp. You may try playing thru someone else's rig and see if you get the same results. Also check what pots you have in your guitar. I'm using 300k, anything higher may be why it's too harsh for you. Droping to a 250k volume pot may darken the tone enough to your liking.

Re: Screamin Demon not my thing?

i found that the sounds i imagined i would get w/ the demon i got w/ the fullshred bridge.
and it sounded great in mahogany, mahogany w/ a maple cap, ash and even hollow ash.
the demon has a cool tone and vibe. raunchy and clear w/ some rattle to it.
sounded more "sonic youth" than i imagined it would.
and this was through a bogner.
