Well after using an eq pedal to shape the sound, i'm satosfied with the Demon.
250k pot > les trebly but more bassy
eq pedal > added mids and altered the BASS
Now i feel changing the demon for something else wouldn't bring me anything better.

yeah i bought a 250k and a 500k pot, but i don't kow where to find the cap. The guys at the shop didn't have it.

Also, I removed one of the Demon poles and noticed that it has a large head which is almost identical to a Gibby except for the hex vs slot and the Demon pole is 1/4 inch shorter. I assume that if they were the same length that they would sound the same?
Anyway, I'll report back with my results.
OK, I did a little digging and I found several sources that sell aftermarket pole screws, one of which is ebay and the others are online guitar parts merchants. The one's for sale don't look as hefty as Gibby's and more like Duncan's and are 3/4 inch long. If my experimenting goes well I'll order some.

OK, I finally got around to removing the hex poles from my SD and replacing with slotted poles from a Pearly Gates and the results are just as I had hoped. The Demon still growls but the sharp attack has been melowed and I'm basically gettiing the tone I was after. Comparing both sounds I must admit that I miss the tightness of the hex pole tone. What I think I'll do is to order a couple sets of slot head poles and play around a bit to see if I can come up with a compromise between the two tones. My thought is that if I shorten the new pole a little at a time maybe I can get a tone that is between a 1/2" hex pole and a 3/4" slotted pole. What I'm hoping to do is to tighten up the tone a little and keep the treble and sharpness a little below what the hex poles have.

I tried the whole hex pole switching thing, but came back to original in the end. The best advice I have heard is what someone told me on an older post, that is, to crank the pickup up as close as you can to the strings, without getting magnet-pull interference in your sound. I have it set a LOT higher than any of my other bridge pickups and it sounds fantastic. I felt like switching the hex poles out lost a lot of the dynamic quality of the pickup. I really like the tight thumping bottom, and the abundant highs.

You don't have to change ALL your strings to a thicker guage, just do your 3 high strings with 1 step larger.
Also i guess you could leave the hex's in the bass strings and put the slots in the high string spots!
I don't like the pearly gates either, it really does have a "rude" sound, and its not very 3D sounding, very thin and very bright. JB is much better than the pearly gates.

Yep, just tried this with mine and it made it sound totally different. It's set close with the pole pieces moved out to within business card thickness from the strings.

Hey Fab, I ordered a bunch of slotted hex poles so I'll be doing some experimenting after they arrive. The screws I ordered appear to have a head size tht looks to be somewhere between a Duncan and a Gibby so that should be interesting. What will also be interesting is trying different poles in my other pup's as well.

Interesting... I tryed sort of close and then moved farther away and it seemed like the tone was more clear at the farther distance. I may have to revisit that and adjust to be very close but if I have to choose between clarity and tone I'll pick clarity every time and figure another way to get the tone. With the Pearly I had in there before I had to keep that pup uite far away to sound it's best.

I've only had the Pearly in one guitar and no way that we could get along. It must be the guitar because that pup has a lot of fans from what I can tell.

Seems like a forumite (fab maybe?) moved 3 of the allen polepieces to the other coil.

OH! Sorry. What I suggested will probably NOT improve CLARITY on the Demon. I like it set closer because it has a little more of the sound of a hot 59' pickup, and I love the Duncan 59's. If you are after clarity first and foremost, you want it set farther away, and probably would not want to radius the pole pieces to match you string radius.

OK, that makes sense, I should have been more clear about that before. I like to use my amp and pedals for boosting/distortion/OD but when I'm on the clean channel with pedals off I want a spankin' clean tone.

Just out of curiosity though, how much of a change in tone would swapping a 500k for a 250k make? Is it drastic or subtle? More or less of a change than swapping poles?

Yep, that's on my to-do list if the pole thing doesn't work out but so far it's looking like I'm getting pretty close. Actually, I think the Demon sounds excellent on it's own but I'm just trying to personalize it a little.
