Screw/Screw and Stud/Stud in series?

If I wire up a virtual humbucker using the outer coils or inner coils in series together, are they hum DOUBLING instead of hum cancelling?

Re: Screw/Screw and Stud/Stud in series?

Yes. What you can do is put the magnet in upside down and wire the pickup backwards. That way they will be hum canceling when stud/stud and screw/screw are activated together.

Re: Screw/Screw and Stud/Stud in series?

Well what I'm designing lets me split to either coil on either pickup individually, so I could have screw/stud, stud/screw, screw/screw and stud/stud all in series, but if the latter two won't be useful I may simplify things so I get only what I would use.

Re: Screw/Screw and Stud/Stud in series?

Thanks for the answer, I suspected as much but I'm relatively new to this and trying to design own wiring, so any help from those who know better is much appreciated.

Re: Screw/Screw and Stud/Stud in series?

So long as everything is properly shielded and you have quality pickups, noise shouldn't be too much of an issue. What pickups are you using?

Re: Screw/Screw and Stud/Stud in series?

I've got a PGB and JazzN, and I did indeed plan on shielding the cavities after I pulled the wiring and pickups out for this rewire.

So are the hum doubling virtual humbuckers worth it, if noise would ideally be low? There's also just a decent chance that they won't sound all that different.

Re: Screw/Screw and Stud/Stud in series?

I do this, but in parallel. I would guess series sounds pretty interesting, too.

Re: Screw/Screw and Stud/Stud in series?

Yeah, series doesn't create too much hum and the Jazz and PG are relatively quiet, you shouldn't have to much of an issue with it. I think it's worth it to at least try it. Personally, I think the inner and outer coils make the biggest difference in tone, but mixing and matching the coils does sound pretty good. Another thing to note is that there is a bigger difference in parallel then series, so stud/stud will sound similar to screw/screw. Not identical by any means, but closer than if you do the same combinations in parallel.

Re: Screw/Screw and Stud/Stud in series?

Yeah I'll have them in series or parallel, on a push pull. The splits aren't fully independent: the volume pots split their respective pickup to the screw coil when pulled, series HB pushed, a third push pull for series parallel between the pickups, and the fourth one makes the pushed option on BOTH pickup stud coil split instead of series HB

Re: Screw/Screw and Stud/Stud in series?

Why not just wire to pair up neck screw & bridge slug in single coil mode? That makes a virtual HB (which is the same as Artie's Coil Swap Mod).
