SD '59 bridge in HSS strat

Hi all,

First post here.

I have a American Deluxe HSS strat which has the DH-1 humbucker in the bridge, and SCN single coils in mid / neck, and S-1 switching.
I am not a big fan of the DH-1 pickup, and wan't to replace it with something different. I have my mind set on a PAF type pickup, and the SD '59 (SH-1) is one of my choices. For the record, my playing style is mainly blues / blues rock.
I am a bit conserned about how it will match the SCN's (which I really like :omg:). Does anyone here have any experience with this combination, or any thoughts on how this will work out?
As far as I know I can order the '59 with a 4-conductor cable, which will make it possible to keep the S-1 switching...

Thanks

What's S-1 switching?

Most people on this forum are not fans of the '59, for A5 PAF style pickups you find more Jazz fans here. And then there's a ton of A2 PAF variants, although the A5 probably matches better with your single coils.

Most people on this forum are not fans of the '59 . . .

Man, I'd have to argue that point. I consider the 59 to be Duncan's "foundation" pickup. I love 'em. Especially in the bridge of a Strat. I think there's a lot of fans here. ;)

Artie,
Any idea how the '59 will work tonewise together with the SCN's?
It will be used split with the middle pickup for a position 4 strat type configuration.

I knew my point would get the fans out of the woodworks and make the thread much richer :)

I can't say for sure with the SCN's, but I can't imagine it sounding bad. I'd wait for some more comments.

No, but I have used the lil 59 w/Van Zant vintage plus SC pups, and it matched well, FWIW. The full size 59 will be bigger sounding, but if my memory serves me correctly, people have liked the 59 w/SC pups.

At any rate, this will bump it up, and someone else may be able to be more specific!

The '59 has been known to take magnet swapping very well, and you should be able to tweak it to go in any direction you'd like.

I've tried the '59 in the bridge of a Strat, with A2, A4, and A5 magnets. FWIW, I thought the A2 '59 sounded the best, so that magnet stayed in it.

Re: SD '59 bridge in HSS strat

My favorite HSS strat humbuckers are definitely C5/59 hybrid, Jazz Bridge Model, and 59B.

The only possible problems you may encounter would be phase issues between the humbucker and middle single. If you encounter that, the best option is to flip the humbucker's magnet around, longways.

You simply push the cloth out of the way, loosen the 4 brass bolts on the bottom and figure out how to drive the magnet out. Be careful not to chip it with pliers or cut your fingers on it. The edges are sharp.

Thanks.
I ordered a 4-conductor version of the '59 because of the S-1 switching in my strat.
Does this magnetflipping method also apply to a 4-conductor, or could I simply swap the leads?

I think you'll be fine, but let us know how it turns out.
