hey, i really want to get the ceramic magnet humbuckers out of my les paul, way to hot and muddy. i was thinking alinco 2 pros, some people have told me there great, and slash is my favorite player. how will these sound in a les paul classic, with a marshall tsl100 half. also what is the difference between slash's a2p's and the stock ones? as for the ceramic magnet pickups, could i switch the ceramic magnet with an alnico magnet and stick em in another guitar? thanx

Hey man,

The Custom Shop has a Set of Slash pups...the difference is that the CS pups are handmade, scatterwound and look old. Both are really good pickups. As for the pups you have...yes you can but different magnets...and to be honest I would do that first. Try some alnico II or V before new pickups, it doesen't cost alot of money...Black Rose Custom have V and sometimes Lewsguitars has or can get some Alnico 4 magnets, which are very cool!

Good luck

what does scatter wound mean? how much difference does being hand made, and stock make? and how do they make the pickup look aged? also, like i said what kind of tone will i be getting? thanx

Re: sd alnico 2 pro in les paul

A friend of mine has them in his gibson les paul classic. I had the chance to plug it in and fool around with it. I loved the neck, very nice sounding. Very ballanced, not modern but not scooped, could do blues, rock. I really hated the bridge at the time. I like being able to get a grungey sound, not compressed but still something a bit rude. It just sounded boring, not agressive enough. Not muddy though.

Scatter winding is discussed in detail in either the FAQ or in the Duncan Q and A...this is not to be rude but it is explained veery well there...being made by hand might not really change the sound at all..being scatter wound will. I do not know how but Duncan can make pickups look old...Look at the Antiquitys...as for the sound, Ceramic magnets have a very harsh treble to me, I find this to be VERY true in Gibson pups...they are very hot, and as far as the pups that you have a buddy of mine had a set...we were able to get no clean sounds at all, and the distortion tone sucked rocks...the Alnico II pros will be far more vintage sounding, as well as having a very smooth treble, nice strong mids and a buttery bottom end...Listen to Slash and you'll get the idea!

I have a set of APH's and I love them. The guy who invented is right, Just listen to Slash. To get Slashes sound out of them either use the neck on some stuff or use the tone knob on the bridge and you will be in tone heaven. They are bluesy pickups but, you can also get good hard rock sounds out of them also.

I have a Custom shop Alnico II Pro (neck) and I totally love it. IT's very warm, liquidy smooth, and open sounding. I've been trying out a bunch of different neck positions to try and get close to "this" tone and I've finally done it :)
