The bare wire in pickup output cable is the permanent connection to ground. Hence, there is no advantage to insulating it against shorting out.

Any other exposed wire strands that touch the bare ground wire will also be connected to ground.

It does touch other components. Its soldered to the baseplate at one end and the ground at the other. And like a lot of ground components, its the job of the solderer to make sure nothing that shouldn't be grounded has an opportunity to touch a ground.

Its bare nature is also a way of telling the wire that is always grounded on every wiring scheme.

Thanks for the knowledge. Also ive had a head injury that i always want to double check everything.Went ahead and installed sd jazz neck in a ibanez gax70 that I am going to give to my daughter. played with head phones on thought it sounded great with reverb and delay.Going to play with band tonight with amp loud so hope to hear how good the jazz is. Seems alot of folks like the jazz
