SD Blackout vs. EMG 81/85

Re: SD Blackout vs. EMG 81/85

Why do you push Blackouts up when you've never tried EMGs ? Same thing.

I understand you really love your EMGs, that's great that you found a sound you enjoy so much.
But I really don't see why you continually put down Blackouts when you've never even tried them.
What's the point?

No it's not, cause I don't say Blackouts are better than EMGs the way you do. I admit I never played EMGs, whereas you always post in Blackout threads as if you know what you're talking about.
I also always think EMGs would be better than Blackouts in certain guitars - every guitar reacts differently to each kind of pickup.

Truth be told, although I like my Blackouts a lot, I prefer my JB, Distortion and Alnico 2 Pros.
I just don't understand people posting advice in forums about something they don't know anything about.

Re: SD Blackout vs. EMG 81/85

The fact that I feel like EMG was being copied by Duncan (and the agressive advertising by Duncan pretending their Blackouts are better and have more tone) might affect my judgment. But as I said before, I think you are right and will try Blackouts ASAP at a local store so that next time we won't have this kind of argument.

I just don't understand people posting advice in forums about something they don't know anything about.

Re: SD Blackout vs. EMG 81/85

Nope and I have no intention to do so if I have to pay for it.
But what would it change anyways?

I'm very opinionated about this subject (Blackouts) and the fact that Duncan seems to have copied EMGs and then pretend theirs are better.

EMGs ARE kings and pioneers in active pickup design. Seymour Duncan (or any other company...) won't be able IMO to touch EMGs anytime soon.

Seymour Duncan passive pickups just KILLS passive EMGs though.

Both companies have their strengths and weaknesses, but EMG definitely wins any active battle over any manufacturer IMO. Can't be any other way...I'm a very traditional guy and the original is always the best to me.

Aye, respectable enough, if you don't wanna try em and you're happy with what you got, why fix what aint broke?

But to tout the superiority of EMGs over blackouts without having any real-world knowledge about the latter makes your arguments a bit hollow, you see? Severely lacking in substance.

Virtual_kevorkian here clearly lays out why he likes EMG's more than blackouts, and while I think he's friggin nuts ( :D ), I respect his opinion, cause I know that he's a solid player and very thorough with his gear.

I'd ask that you reserve judgment until you've had some experience with blackouts, but that's up to you bro.

It's cool that you like EMG's so much. If they work for you, they work for you. But this is only guitar gear we're talking about...try not to take it to heart ;).

*edit* I see that much of what I have said has already been covered...oh well. Peace ;).

Wait a minute...

You've never tried EMGs ?

If you play shred leads with lots of fast licks and want to cut through the mix like a mofo in heat when playing live, EMGs are there for you !

If you play rhythm though, I don't doubt the Blackouts would do the job.

I could see that. The Blackouts can be a little full, and the EMG's are thinner allowing you to cut through.

Strangely, I tend to think Seymour Duncan are making some of the best active pickups you can buy.
I like SD's actives more than all their passive range and at least for now anyway, I never intend to buy passive SDs again, because their actives are so amazing.
When I heard an A-B comparison of the EMG 707s versus the 7 string Blackouts, the SDs were simply far better.
The 707s are not bad, just 'lacking, but the SDs have it all covered.
Clearer, more articulate, less compressed, better clean tone and less noise.

Re: SD Blackout vs. EMG 81/85

Well, what I like about the EMGs is that they are compressed and very smooth in the top end (like : less clear).

I play leads only (never rhythm) and I don't need a clear pickup, just something that can handle maxed out gain and FX while maintaining a certain level of clarity and never being harsh.

Also, the noise argument just bugs me a lot...I NEVER EVER had noise problems with my EMGs, they are extremely quiet compared to any passive pickup I've had. I can't imagine someone needing an improvement over EMGs as far as noise is considered. The noise floor with the EMGs is already in the -90dBs, which is excellent, no need to improve on that.

Such a bogus argument by Seymour Duncan IMO

Also, the noise argument just bugs me a lot...

I think the same thing every time I see that "14db less noise" line in the Blackout ad. I'm sure that it's technically true, but properly installed EMGs are pretty much dead silent when you're not playing.

Ignorance is not a virtue!!!!!

Re: SD Blackout vs. EMG 81/85

Glad you like your Blackouts.
I don't feel the need to even try the Blackouts, because my EMGs are SO GOOD and excellent for what I want...
Why fix something that isn't broken eh?
Maybe people like Blackouts better because they are DIFFERENT and they try to justify the $$$ spend? Just my 0.02$ worth...

maybe u will hate them...who knows....but u should just try them

Re: SD Blackout vs. EMG 81/85

I'm as down for "open minded-ness" as anybody else, but if a bro's happy with his EMG's, then all is cool.

I'd just say, a bro should try them if he wants to comment on their quality. Otherwise, rock on with what ya got ;).

Re: SD Blackout vs. EMG 81/85

Why the hell would someone come into a Blackouts thread on the SEYMOUR DUNCAN forums and argue that EMG's are better when the basis of their debate is hearsay? Sure, go to a store and play a couple of power chords prior to judging, or better yet, pretend you did so you can remain obstinate.
